Protein Shakes

Recommended Posts

I was wondering about this since I came back to this board a few days ago. I keep reading about people who drink powder (obviously mixed with Water or whatever) Protein shakes.

My doctor has specifically said no powder shakes at all unless they are like a hot cocoa or something like that. He said that (well his staff said) thwy can clog the opening where you are banded.

So I was just wondering has anyone else been told this by a doctor. It seems like my doc is the only one who has this rule.

I am going to follow it cause he is the one who banded me and I do not want to have problems and have him not back up the band because I failed to follow rules but I was just curious. Has anyone else been told this?

I guess all I can think is that it must be due to the fact that if you ever let a Protein Drink that was a powder sit the powder will settle. Maybe since he has done so many surgeries he has seen this "settling" happen in someones body? I am baffled I can not understand it but anyway anyone have any better clues or has your doctor advised you of the same?

Thanks

That is a baffling rule because I think most people use Protein powder at least sometimes. But I think you are probably correct to follow the rule, at least for now. Once you get more settled into the band you can probably start to do what makes sense to you.

I've been banded about a week and I use the powders a lot so far. They seem to dissolve pretty well. I've had no problems yet.

No I am never going to be allowed to use them. It is a rule from my surgeon!

I understand that is your surgeon's rule, but I still say that the band is yours and there may come a time when you feel like you want to do what makes sense to you instead of following the rule. It can be hard to get in enough Protein without powders.< /p>

Besides, from looking at your post, it seems like it may have been the staff, not the surgeon, that had the rule in the first place. I'd ask the surgeon for clarification. I'd also ask how much Protein he wants you to consume, and how he wants you to consume it if you can't use powders. Many people have problems eating things like chicken and beef. They can get stuck.

If the surgeon sticks to the rule and tells you that you need to follow it, I'd still do what made sense to me once I was comfortable with the band. After all, this rule is not followed by anyone else at all, as far as I can tell. It's your band, your health, your life.

That sounds a bit extreme to me. The powder dissolves. ??? So does that mean no powdered anything? Koolaid, instant coffee, cappucino, Gatorade, etc??

No just the Protein and I can have and drink the liquid Protein drinks daily. I just can not use the powdered ones. So I am getting my Protein and I have had good luck with all of the meats thus far. No problems at all.

I guess the point to following the surgeons advice is that if his band failed or I had a complication as a result it would be my fault and not his.

It is his rule as he has it on his follow-up instructions.

Wow, I've never heard that. I'm having surgery next month and I've stocked up on Protein powders!! I have about 5 containers of the stuff!! I will have to ask my surgeon about that. A co-worker of mine has the lapband and she drank protein powders the first 2 weeks all day long every day. She still drinks it from time to time. I hope it's ok, they keep my blood sugar stabilized and keeps me from feeling hungry. :(

I have heard that and it does make sense to a point. If you are drinking your Protein, it goes right through the band and you will feel hungry faster. That being said, if I am on the go or on the way to the gym, I still have them occasionally, may 2 or 3 times a week. It hasn't hurt my success and my doctor hasn't said not to, so I keep doing what works for me.

You can get powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury here, order it on line. They might also list some stores where you can get it somewhere on this web site. Other on line sources like ebay also have it.

This sounds strange to me to. I'm not banded yet, but I have ordered lots of Protein powder already, so I will be ready after surgery. I haven't heard anything like that at all from my surgeons office, but I haven't been to a nutrition class yet. I'll just have to wait and see.

hm sounds weird cause the Protein Drinks you buy are made of powder as well.if you mix the powder Protein well then there should be no bits that could clogg the band.or maybe he was joking and meant not to eat in in powdery state? I understand that its more calories and has to be count towards your daily intake but other than that I dont understand why he doesnt want you to drink it:-)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
