I'm sorry but I'm just not 'wait 30 minutes to drink after eating' guy.

I thought the same thing. I'm 5 months out and still forget and take a sip while I'm eating and every time it hurts. You'd think I would have learned by now. Old habits are hard to break.

Back when I was banded, I had the same rule, to wait so I don't wash my food thru too soon. I physically couldn't drink for about 30-45 mins after eating cuz it would cause me to vomit. I got used to waiting a while to drink

Now that I'm sleeved, food doesn't cause a plug in my esophagus and I can sip with meals. I attempted to take a guzzle last week after just a couple bites and it felt like it was gunna come. Back up. Not sure why but if I stick to sips now and then I'm fine. About 50% of drs nowadays say its ok, some don't. My dr said its whatever I'm comfortable with. So I take small sips...

You can so do this! I thought I would never get used to not drinking and eating at the same time, or within 30 min, but I did. Finish a meal, set the alarm on my phone and think about something else. I find the thirst actually passes. I often forget to get something to drink even after the alarm goes off.

Here's another trick: finish your meal with something moist. I've been known to grab a small container of applesauce, or piece of fresh fruit. Even just a few bites helps. Or, I've been known to have a sugar-free lifesaver or mint. That stimulates your saliva and helps the time pass.

I was reminded today about the effects of drinking too soon after eating. Running out the door full after a protein-dense lunch. I grabbed a s/f Vitamin Water to take with me, then absent-mindedly took a swig. Oh, the pain! I had forgotten how uncomfortable it was to be that full.

Good luck on your journey. It's going to be amazing!

I drink while I eat. Or I drink right before it right after.

Definitely a tough one...I had to change my thinking ...so instead of saying I have to wait 30 minutes after I eat...I tell myself that I drink first...so even when I go to restaurant I am downing 1-2 glasses of ice Water with a twist of lemon while we wait for the meal...it usually takes abt 20 minutes anyway so it works to curb my thirst...easy? Absolutely not! But does it keep me from dying of thirst when I eat? YES!

Changing this habit was difficult for me. Today' date=' when I have something stuck in the throat, I do take a small sip, but for the most part, I try not to. I know that I can consume way more food, therefore, way more calories when I drink with my meals. When I was training hard for running races, I would drink with my meals to carb load. It was the only way I could prevent bonking when I ran at race pace for longer distances. I could easily eat twice the amount when I drank with my meals and could easily eat more half an hour after a meal.
video has been posted often here and it is from a bypass patient, but it is still relevant, I think. As I said, I know it is true for me, your milage may vary. And, of course, we all have our own reasons for WLS and it is up to each of us to decide what we are willing to do to accomplish the goals we set out for ourselves.

Wow! Great demonstration. I am 5 weeks out and today is my first day eating food I can chew...and I found myself reaching for a glass at dinner...good thing I didnt have one. Just a habit that has to be changed, and the demonstration with the funnel will stay in my mind. Thank you for sharing that link.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
