How does one locate a psychologist who specializes in overeating?

Recommended Posts

I think I need to get some counseling along with my surgery to deal with my emotional eating issues but I'm not sure how to locate someone who specializes in this. I can easily find people who specialize in anorexia/bulimia, but not overeating or emotional eating. Advice?

Try a Google search. Also, check for overeaters anonymous meetings in your area. They're free and quite helpful.

I think you'll find if they're specialist in Anorexia and Bullimia, they're going to be well academically versed on subnormal relationships with food...In whatever form it comes....

Odds are any psychologist will be able to help. I've had one for 8 years now and she deals with everything out there. Finding the right one was more important to me than what her specialty was. I just chose one near my house.

Good luck.

Maybe ask your surgeon or Nutritionist. They may know someone they can recommend.

I just starting seeing a psychologist to prepare me for post op. And find out why food is my best friend,, I am taking anti depressant meds (I see a psychiatrist for my meds)

She gave me a reference.. My psychologist. Is is specialist in eating disorders. That is when have an unhealthy relationship with food, whether it is bulimia, anexoria, binge eater, compulsive eater, etc. I went to a psychologist for 6 months who did not specialize with food disorders. It seems she did not get my problem with food, so I recently changed to someone who deals with food issues. And it is much better..she understands.

I 100% agree. I am in recovery from binge eating disorder and any therapist who deals with disordered eating will be able to help you. Good luck!!

And great job being so proactive and honest about your situation!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
