*Rosana* 66 Posted October 3, 2013 Hello All, Hope everyone is doing well. I have a quick question for those of us who have already had their VSG surgery. Is there a minimum B.M.I requirement? I ask because my surgery is self-pay with Dr. Illan on Nov 4th and I am currently dieting and losing weight (getting a head start). I have lost 15 lbs and have a BMI of 41.2 and I read somewhere you need a minimum of 40. Is this correct? What was your BMI pre-surgery? Please and thank you for all replies, God bless you. Timeforchange20 8 Posted October 3, 2013 My mom had a BMI of 35 and had surgery
cpeycke 16 Posted October 3, 2013 Are you having it in the states? I don't believe there has to be a 40 BMI with self pay, even in the states. If your paying u just have to be obese I would think. I am way under that and getting it done self pay but in Mexico.
PdxMan 4,292 Posted October 3, 2013 cpeycke is correct. Minimum BMI requirements only come into play with insurance. I was self pay with a BMI of 39. I believe there is a forum here for low BMI'ers. I have seen them as low as 30.
No game 14,437 Posted October 3, 2013 Most Doctors in Mexico will operate on as low as 30 If remember correctly.
Momonanomo 534 Posted October 3, 2013 My insurance, as well as my surgeon, had a requirement of at least a 40 or at least a 35 with comorbidities.
Momonanomo 534 Posted October 3, 2013 But I must also say that once I was "accepted" into their bariatric program I was welcome to lose if I was able to presurgery. You should probably check with your surgepn for his requirements and guidelines.
Italiancurves 117 Posted October 3, 2013 My doctor in Mexico will only operate as low as 3O BMI
peachie86 63 Posted October 3, 2013 My BMI was 35 with medical conditions when I started this process, and once I started on my requirements I could try and lost weight which made me just under a 35 BMI the day of surgery. I actually was encouraged to lose 21 pounds but lost only 13 before surgery.

*Rosana* 66 Posted October 3, 2013 Thank you all your replies. I am having surgery in Mexico. I was just wondering, about my BMI... Don't want to jeopardize my surgery for anything. I still going to diet then. Rosana
Madam Reverie 2,958 Posted October 3, 2013 In the UK, it's 40 minimum standard and down to 35 with co-morbidities.
