How is the LB when you get the flu, etc?

Recommended Posts

One of my sons and I have been both sick since last night and today from the flu. Which I know things happen, thats life. But after reading about the possible slip of the band from throwing up, etc.

1) Does having the LB make you feel even worse when you are sick with things like the flu? I really really hate to threw up, and

2) I am wondering how the LB effects or affects you when you are sick?

I haven't been faced with that yet...I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but I had asked my surgeon about throwing up and he said they would prescribe an anti-nausea medication. It's definitely not good to throw up but I don't think the band affects you differently when you're sick.

I had the flu a few weeks ago. Dry heave Vomiting & liquid BM's. Not fun, but it never is. I was told if this happens again to see my doc right away for a anti-nausea shot. Other than the dry heaves and not being able to vomit, it was tolerable.

Maudeispam, is dry heaving what will happen from now on? I got sick on monday and my stomach was upset and kept going thru the motions of trying to thow up but nothing was coming out. This went on from the middle of the night till 6 hrs later. My doc office said that I should have been able to vomit, but I wasnt. I have great fears about this happening again.

Anyone else have this problem???:)

I had the flu-virus a week ago. 3 day of no eating, not wanting to drink, shitting untill it was clear. I had to force myself to drink gatoraid. Back to normal now, not fun. Band is fine

Thanks so much everyone for letting me know about this. All though it seems there can be very different results but it sounds like it is best to keep some kind of anti-nausea med around?

Do you think after I have the surgery I should ask for a prescription to keep on hand?:)

Meds on hand, sounds like if you have them-you will never need them. Go get the meds, I would prefer to waste the money and not be sick!

I had a stomach bug which made me nauseated. Not to be too graphic but...I really needed to throw up and it was difficult. I felt a lot of pressure and a small amount of vomit did make it's way out. My band is fine and if it continued then I was definately going to take some anti-nausea meds. You can get lozenges at the pharmacy, or you bariatric doctor can prescribe a "real" anti-nausea med. So...for me I can still throw up post-band but it is a whole lot harder to do.

My band slipped while I had the stomach flu. I couldn't properly throw up and so I was heaving and heaving...It was extremely painful! I recommend a liquid nausea medication (otc) called EMETROL. It works well. Also, if you can get nausea supositories (sp?) from a MD that works the best!

I haven't been able to vomit since having the band. Spittle yes, but throw up no. Just the dry heaves. It sucks having the stomach flu. I just try and knock myself out for a few days until it passes.

what about gagging/retching? I am doing better with it now since we added on Astelin nose spray (in addition to all the other stuff) and I am also on allergy shots now, but sometimes I get really bad post nasal drip. And I have a pretty sensitive gag reflex, along with GERD (I was born with GERD. Spent the first year of my life in the car seat)

So if I get bad post nasal drip sometimes it makes me choke and gag and then triggers some dry heaving or even a little vommitting/reflux. Or if I just cough really hard (like if I have a cold) after I've eaten a meal now and have a full stomach it is not at all unusual to have some of that come back up. Or even just do that randomly- it is reflux. My surgeon said the band would likely help with the reflux in general.

But what I am a little concerned about is that sometimes I tend to dry heave a little bit in general anyway. Its nothing I would have thought of... until now.

Also, did any of you ever projectile vomit before? I don't mean to be gross or anything, its just that last time I had the stomach flu thats what happened- I do that sometimes. I'm just wondering what I should ask my doctor about and areas of concern. Knowing when a little nausea is ok and when some is not, etc.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
