I'm preop and my Endocrinologist wants me to focus on getting ny blood sugars down also..he has approved my surgery, but says it is vitil to go into the surgery w ugh my type II insulin dependant diabetes under control, as diabetes hinders healing and since so much of this surgery will rely on internal healing, he thinks it's a good idea to have my sugars in check...I hope to be sleeved by end of year. Best of luck to both of us!

As you probably know, A1c levels are a measure over time...a 3 month average so to speak. Work on keeping your blood glucose down and the number will drop.

Do you think i should postpone it the surgeon will still do it if my doctor thinks with her increasing my insulin it can go down within a month.

Follow the MD's advice. The Great News is that the sleeve can positively (and immediately) impact your status...

If you want to lower your blood sugars as much a possible, please consider a low carb diet between now and the time of your surgery. It will allow you to keep a tighter control on your sugar levels than on a diet with carbs. You should ask the doctor that manages your diabetes what they think about that. If you have the time, get a copy of the book "Dr. Bernsteins' Diabetes Solution" so that you can understand how to achieve the tighter control.

Of course you will be using less insulin, so you may need to test more often than usual for the first several days of the low carb diet, so that you can maintain the tighter control without going low.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
