How dangerous is vomiting?

Recommended Posts

I haven't been sleeved yet, but am greatly worried about vomiting. I have a strong gag reflex, and sometimes just brushing my teeth will bring up my Breakfast. If you are newly sleeved, won't vomiting injure your stomach? Does it maybe cause leakage? How dangerous is it?

I'm 4 and a half months post op, and haven't vomited once. Not everyone has that problem. Follow your surgeon's diet, chew well, eat slowly, don't drink 30 min before or after eating and you should be fine.

I asked this exact question. They said it wasn't dangerous at all, but your surgeon may say otherwise. I've vomited a few times where I overate, and nothing bad happened at all. The things they use to create the sleeve can endure far more than the muscle contractions caused by vomiting.

You are one lucky lady. Maybe I'll be that lucky, but I highly doubt it. For those that do vomit after just being sleeved, do you worry that it is harming your newly sleeved stomach? Does your doctor say anything about it?

That's comforting.... it's just that I can feel my stomach contract strongly when it happens, and it is sometimes sore afterwards. When I see my doc next month, I'll have to see what he says about it. I would love to hear any other thoughts on the topic.

If it is any consolation, your stomach isn't sore. If it was your stomach that was sore, the pain after your surgery would be unimaginable. After all, they literally cut off the vast majority of it. The stomach doesn't have pain receptors of the kind that your skin or other parts of your body has. It cannot "feel" pain in that way.

Instead, you likely feel pain from the muscles that contract when you vomit. For most people, those muscles are rarely, if ever used. So it's normal that on the occasion that you vomit, those muscles will be sore...just like if you did some other exercise working a group of muscles you don't normally use. Since they are muscles in your abdomen and around your stomach, that's where you will feel the pain. But all is well. The soreness will dissipate.

I had a lot of nausea/ intense gagging the first 24 hrs (had nothing to actually vomit), but my doctor said it wouldn't cause a problem. But past the 24 hr mark, I've only had one vomit episode.

When I was in the hospital after my surgery, one of my nurses had also been sleeved. She said she spent her first 3 days vomiting and everything for her was fine. She said that wasn't common but it happens to some people who don't react well to pain meds.

That being said, I had a lot of nausea with the surgery. However the anti-nausea meds and walking kept me from vomiting. I dry heaved a few times which hurt...

I never actually vomited though until I was about 4 weeks out and certain soft foods did not agree with my tummy. The thought scared me too, but knowing that my nurse had been vomiting right away after surgery seemed to make it not as scary and more normal.

Ye..I would recommend a prescription of nausea meds prior to surgery. Ask your doc..

I will. I'm hoping it won't be hard to take them after being sleeved.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
