Weight gain after surgery

Recommended Posts

It is the weirdest thing going in for my surgery and I am 208#. This is on September 26th Then when I leave 4 days later I am at 221.9#. I am going to assume that this is Water weight as per I've been on liquid diet is anyone else leaving surgery had an influx in weight gain due to holding in water or Fluid retention?? I feel bloated I have been passing gas I have been walking. Drinking tons of water but I guess I will go see when I meet with my surgeon tomorrow any thoughts on this. I am following the diet so it is just weird to me!!! I don't want to freak out!

I haven't had the surgery yet but from reading yes, people gain Water wait initially then lose it like the next week

I gain 10lbs just from the i.v fluids alone!!! My surgery weight was 228, my post-op weight (just a few hours later) on the same scale was 238!!!

So don't worry so much about fluids...they can come and go a lot through the course of a day.

I weighed in surgery day at 206 i think and I left weighing 219. I thought "what the heck did I do?" But thanks to the knowledgeable people here I realized that was Water weight and GAS omg the GAS! I lost it within 10 days or so though. Hang in there!!

I also gained weight for a few days after surgery but after the 1st week it poured off. Just trust it worked and stay hydrated!

Thank all of you so much you make me feel so much better!! I just weighed in at my docs office and I was 218. Which is still ten pounds up from surgery but with your guys advice I am no longer so.....worried. I am going to go over my Vitamins and things I'm suppose to take while I am with him today. I take medication daily and I have not taken any pills by mouth since the day before because I am scarred to crush them it makes me really uneasy anyone else have this problem?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
