Sleeved 2 weeks ago - Scar started bleeding today, coughed blood too, should I worry?

Recommended Posts

Hey there

Since its 1:30am now and I have no access to a doctor, I thought I'd ask here in case anyone is familiar with these symptoms.

Today is exactly 2 weeks after I got the sleeve. And the first day I started eating soft solid foods.

At first almost puked and felt very nauseated but if I eat very small amounts I'm fine.

Heres the odd thing - One of the scars (the biggest, I guess where they took the stomach out) felt a bit 'hard' unlike other days. And later on during the day I noticed it started oozing out blood. The color is not 'normal' blood. It seems more like the color of the drainage tube I had in the hospital 2 weeks ago.

Could it be an absess? Maybe something else? The area is a bit uncomfortable with very faint sharp pain from time to time but nothing too major. However its been leaking this blood-liquid thing for a few hours on and off now.

Second of all - About an hour ago, I started hiccuping and suddenly had sharp pain in my throat. Got a bit difficult to breath and I started coughing blood for a few minutes. Could feel blood filling my throat and had to cough it out and it kept filling up.

Could this be related? I'm not sure. Its gone for now atleast.

I think I had the same blood-cough symptom a few months ago before the operation but not entirely sure. Its back now though.

I'm not in any major pain or anything though, should I be worried? Anyone else experienced any of these?

Thanks

Coughing blood is very serious. I would head to the emergency room. This is not something to mess with.

Are you OK with the consequence if it "doesn't get better"?

Firstly, did you have pre-op bloodwork done? If so, do you have a copy of it?

Secondly, are your wounds currently un-dressed? If so, how long have they been un-dressed? Are you noticing any redness radiating from the wound site which extends past 2-3 centimeters? Is it hot to the touch?

Did you tell the/a doctor about the last coughing up blood episode?

I agree with PDXman.

coughing up blood is not normal to the sleeve. You should put a call into the on call doctor right away or go to urgent care.

@pdxman: Yes I'm a lil bit worried about that, but it only lasted for a few minutes and I don't feel bad now. Also the fact it happend a few weeks ago probably (hopefully) means its not related to the surgery directly. Perhaps its some sort of infection...? It doesn't 'feel' way too urgent though.

@Madam: Yes I had pre-op bloodwork done, should I link it? What am I looking for?

The wounds are undressed and been undressed since day 9 (5 days ago) since the stitches were taken out. The area is a little red but I don't think it extends 2-3 cms. Its a little warm to the touch but not much.

@Laura: No didn't tell the doctor since its past 1am and only happend a lil while ago. Hes probably asleep. It feels more of a throat thing I think, but not sure.

If your bloodwork indicated an infection, they wouldn't have operated on you - so there was no infection pre-op - so if this is a repeat coughing fit, that was similar to the one before the surgery, it is likely to be unrelated and not likely to have been borne out of infection. However and as everyone has said, coughing up blood is never good. Although there is a difference between having a cough, making mini-tears in the throat which might lead to blood and hucking up blood from the lungs. I have found my lungs are a bit 'watery' since the surgery, however, I am not bringing up blood. Sorry to ask for the graphics, but just how much blood are we talking about? Pure blood? Pinky tinged clear sputum? Green sputum with red in it? Do you have a temperature and secondly, where did you have your operation?

Yeh I agree it might be unrelated but I'm not entirely sure.

As for the amounts of blood and color - It seems to be 'normal' red, perhaps dry?

Not excessive amounts but its definitely seen. A few strings of blood each time within a mucus like substance, so its not 'pure' blood. So 'clear' sputum with red in it.

And I don't seem to have a temprature.

The operation was in a hospital about.. 1.5 hours away by car. (or did you want a specific location?)

Another detail I forgot to mention, which I kinda suspect now that I think of it, is that yesterday due to some god awful Constipation (which I've never had before but was told it happens after this operation) that lasted over 4 hours, my stomach was cramping like you wouldn't believe. It was almost as painful as the pain right after operation. I suspect the strong painful cramps may have something to do with it...

Thank you all for your replies and concern, now after about 2 hours since the incident I seem to be feeling alright so I've calmed down a bit.

I'm seeing a doctor tomorrow and I think I should get some sleep, I'm not as worried anymore because most of the symptoms are gone (still bleeding just a lil). Not in any pain or anything. If anything happens during the night I'll head to the ER but so far I seem to be alright.

Yeah, sounds like a bit of a strain somewhere both in your stomach and throat. As long as you haven't got a temperature, you can (and should) drink lots of Water, take a painkiller and your wound site is cool to the touch, you're golden. Rest well and any signs of breathlessness/disorientation in the night, straight to the ER.

I am not sure that I would wait to get seen. Coughing up blood is something that should be addressed ASAP. As far as discharge from your wound, that should really be addressed also--its not normal esp. since you had surgery a couple weeks ago. Good luck with everything.

Sleevefox,

Well, what happened? was it serious? I am reading all this and wondering what was the diagnosis from the doctor you seen the next day?

Oh! I apologize I forgot to update.

The doctor said the bleeding from the scars was normal and nothing to worry about, that it happens sometimes.

Regarding the blood coughing, she said its probably unrelated to the surgery and told me to set an appointment with an ENT doctor (eat-nose-throat). So far I'm waiting for the appointment.

The coughing did not return so far so I'm not way too worried, I seem to be doin alright :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
