selfpay Help!

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I am looking for a good surgeon at a good price. I want someone who has done lots of sleeves with good results. I am self pay, and am willing to consider anywhere in the US and Mexico. Price matters but anywhere under 15000 is OK. It is especially hard to figure out who has the good self pay prices in the US as the websites are not always easy to navigate and many say "contact us." I don't want to take the time to contact them if the cost is 30 000 dollars like it is here in Indianapolis!!! I am jumping all over the place researching right now and would love some help.

Thanks for your time!

I had my surgery in July in New York City.....look up Dr. Daniel Herron at Mount Sinai

Hospital......great place......had surgery two months ago and already lost 65 pounds....not easy....worth it.....I would never go to Mexico......the training is not the same....and many do not have post graduate fellowships in bariatric surgery.....[at least 2 to 3 yrs training post residency] best of luck.....

Thanks GluenFree!

Phantom, do you know the price for self pay?

I am a little more open to Mexico than you perhaps. Several drs I have researched have excellent education and training. In addition they have done more sleeves than most US drs which research shows really does matter in terms of success and complication rates. I will look up Dr. Herron. Sounds like you haved a great experience! I would love to go to New York (Just have to be able to afford it!!)

Thanks for your help!

I'm in Texas using Dr. Babineau in Tyler, Tx. His self pay is 12,450.00 I know because I am self pay also :) he accepts care credit which is what I will be using and is one of the top docs in the US.

I had Dr. Borland in Louisiana and he was great! Here's my review: http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/89160-dr-borland-new-iberia-la/

Also in my signature is a link to my blog where I list a bunch of surgeons in the US and their self-pay prices.

I was looking at using Dr. Nick Nicholson in Dallas - great reviews and $12,200. But I decided to pay more and stay closer to home. I felt more comfortable with more aftercare, BLIS insurance, and also having a doctor who performs 1-2 surgeries a day as opposed to someone who does 11-13 a day.

I used Dr. Nicholson. It really is all inclusive. I was very happy, Almost 7 months out and could not be happier! He is top rated surgeon.

Good luck with your decision. You will be so happy with your sleeve, wherever you get it!

We went to dr. Alvarez in Mexico who is extremely experienced and has a. Very low complication rate. We paid $8,900 each and could not be happier. I've posted a review here as well as on my blog.

Btw he only does 3 surgeries a day and that mattered to me

He did seem really good. Office was very responsive. But I really did not want to deal with either flying or driving home after surgery. Dr. Houston is 20 minutes from me. And I know this seems kind of silly, but I really preferred being assured of a morning surgery as opposed to one of 13 that could be any time during the day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
