How long is leakage a risk?

Recommended Posts

I heard if you have a leak it disturbs your weight loss. Is this true?

Yes, it did for me. When I was re admitted to the hospital for the leak, they were pumping fluids in me along with the antibiotics. When I came home, I gained 6 pounds. I was furious! I complained to the nurse practitioner, how can a person gain 6 pounds when they can only eat ice chips!!! He told me not to worry, and it would come off. During the 4 weeks I was on the IV feedings, the 6 pounds came off. Once they stopped the IV, the weight started falling off and hasn't stopped yet!

I had a leak 2 weeks after the surgery. I'm not sure how long after the surgery it's a risk for though.

Did u have a barium swallow test in the hospital prior to bring discharged after your vsg?

I know the chance of a leak gets less and less as time goes by, but (not to freak anyone out!) I did read a medical article once of a few people who had developed a leak about 16 months post op.

My dr said the majority of leaks r within the first 3 days. They CAN happen later, but ur chances r minimal. That's just MY drs opinion tho. I've read on here at least 1 person who had a leak at like a month post op. Its very rare tho

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
