As long as you're taking it very carefully and are eating foods that can be pulverized orally, I wouldn't worry too much. I was chowing down on normal food at week 4 and it made me feel like a different human being. As for your fantasies - I understand that, too. I went through a proper mourning period for eating 'quantities' (ridiculous, considering it was that very thing that got me into this mess!)... As for the 'funnel' feeling? Yep, had that, too. A veritable vortex was created after having the surgery! I found it amusing. Hubble, bubble toil and trouble! :D

I do eat things that I can chew very well. Does the funnel/gurgle feeling last? Will I always be soooo overly concerned about food going down?

Erm, I'm only 8 weeks out and I have to give it 'consideration'. I can't sit down to eat something and chomp my way through it at break-neck speed. I have to consider, I have to chew and I'm usually good. It's when I'm spoken to mid-eating or distracted that I often make mistakes and my sternum reminds me to slow the heck down... But it's my sternum that reminds me. Not, my stomach as such.

As for the funnel/gurgling. Funneling, I get sometimes first thing in the morning with my cup of tea. Gurgling, when I've eaten lots of brassica vegetables. Then it's gurgling and wind-o-rama! Poop-Poop!

As for the concerns for food going down, you'll have to ask the lifers as to whether this changes after a year or so?

The thought of Kim Jong Il in knickers is the stuff of night terrors. So no....no pics.

Lots of things change over time. Just keep in mind that you have had many nerves cut from your stomach, and you may not be able to feel over eating early on. Stay on plan as much as you can, chew chew chew anything off plan, and the funnel (had it) gurgling (had it) will go away at some time. Your stomach still does not know what hit it... be kind! pizza, cake and lollies can come later, after little sleevie has healed up.

Do you still think after 4 weeks my stomach cannot feel over eating? I can pretty much tell when I get full.

Have you ever had a scar... that was numb early on? The docs say no heavy lifting for at least 6 weeks... then take care. The staple line is considered fully healed at 6 months. Thats when the swelling goes down and you get back to "normal", the honeymoon is over, you can eat more, tolerance to a variety of foods come back...some who find raw food, skins, chilies, milk a problem early on, can eat them again. Things just seem more normal, and it may get harder to lose, too feel full. Use your early time to the best advantage you can, it does not get easier to lose later. You will get to eat "normally" soon enough. Just my take on things from personal experience, and reading the posts of other vets through the years. Take care, no reason not to early on.

Okay, so, since I've been frequenting this virtual bariatric world, there appear to be a few issues which seem to ignite much debate and throw the most meekly devised threads into huge ego-centric 'flaming' exercises. Not only do I, personally, find this predictably boring; it is also deeply unhelpful. We all know that this process changes or should change, how we do and view things to do with food and wider health issues, forever. As such, it takes a bit of getting used to. The prospect of having to adapt our long-held behaviours is scary and our little food related rituals? They are tough bleedin' Cookies to break. (My apologies for mentioning the 'C' word there) Consequently, I'm a big believer in the adage that 'skeletons in the cupboard' are no longer 'skeletons', if they are dragged out into the light of day. (Normally kicking and screaming with the neighbours looking on in horror) So, roll-up, roll-up. Consider this an online bariatric confessional! There'll be no 'Hail Mary's' or 'Our Fathers' and flagellation will NOT and should not be forthcoming. I want you to tell us your 'dirty' little bariatric secrets. What did you do? Why did you do it? (and I will refrain from asking 'with whom?' you did it!) How did it make you feel afterwards? Did you resolve to never do it again - or indeed, did you think that actually, everything in moderation is not so bad after all? Did you chow down on that hot-sauce laden and cheese encrusted beef taco 2 days post op? (No one can tell I'm fantasizing about anything that does not constitute a 'fluid' much, can you?!!!) Did you sneak into the fridge and eat all your kids chocolate bars, happy in the knowledge that your Protein Pump Inhibitors would prevent you from getting indigestion? Did you swallow 10 vodka martini's to see if your pouch and your legs could take it? Come on, tell Aunty Revs and lets see if we can put these beasts to bed once and for all <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> x As is only fair, I shall go first.. Tonight, I, 8 days post surgery, ate a fair amount of cheese frosting off the top of a red velvet cupcake (and maybe a couple of mouthfuls of the sponge, too). Why? Because it was there. Did it make any sense? No, because I have never craved sweet stuff. I'm a savoury kind of girl. What did I learn from it? That damn, I'm an emotional eater (which I never thought I was) and that shockingly, that **** went down a little bit too easily. Consequently, I learnt in that way lies grave danger... See, if I can do it, anyone can. So, step forward and lets hear the 'worst' you've got. Everyone is welcome and all are equal here <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> x

I made pizza bubble cake...a.k.a biscuits filled with pepperoni and mozzarella, dipped in italian butter, and sprinkled with parmersan for the my company to watch the football games. I ate one and 1/2 of them.........and boy did I pay for it. Ending up having to take a 45 min walk to digest it and felt so horrible. It is official that is a recipe I will never have again.

A friend gave me chocolate covered pretzels that she made herself. I had 2 of them and spent the next few minutes racing to the restroom. What worse yhey are still on mu fridge. I need to toss them but they were very good.

I drink Coke Zero. Through a straw.

I am laughing so hard at this I'm afraid my staples might come out! And the "never trust a fart"...OMG this is the BEST laugh I've had in months!!! Love it!!

I drink a glass or so of coke zero in a week. I have No problems with it. I can eat pretty much everything except salad (which I miss )and milk.

I just only eat a few bites then I'm full. I was sleeved 3-25-2013 I'm down 70lbs!

Do you have trouble with the lactose?

Have you tried Fairlife milk? It is amazing. For some it takes a bit to get used to. I love it. It is ultra-filtered milk. No lactose. More Protein. Less sugar. More Calcium.

I've used Lactaid as well, but I prefer Fairlife and buy a few of them at a time when they are on sale (a lot of fuel stations near me sell them in the smaller bottles as well).

Love this thread. Great to have others who understand the struggle.

There's no way I could confess this elsewhere. I am 6 weeks out. And almost all food is bleh to me. I dislike almost everything now! Unless there is a lot of cheese involved. Funny, since I was not a cheese addict preop. But now, it's all I will eat. But not the mozzarella sticks my NUT approved preop. No. Cooked cheese products. Rotel. Mac and cheese. Bad cheese stuff. Other foods? I'll apparently starve before eating it (seriously - sometimes 300-400 calories a day without cheese lol).

So today, they had pizza at work. I have wanted to try the healthy pizza options, but haven't had time yet. So this seemed like a perfect opportunity to deal with the craving. I knew they were having lunch, and I figured it would be pizza. And I was kind of glad. Thought it was a great excuse to 'try' it. I got a small piece of thin crust to taste. I tried to be good and soak up the grease, as I know tummy gets pissed if I even THINK of anything greasy. Apparently, even though there was a cheese like substance involved, she got pissed anyway. Just a couple of bites, and I knew there was trouble. She was angry and did her best to divest me of the poison. Several times. Over at least a half hour.

In other words, be obedient to the boss!

And I am over wanting pizza for quite awhile! Lol.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
