Do family & friends think you're doing the right thing?

The main approval you need is from yourself. How do you feel about starting this journey? Once you are fully committed you can then share what you’ve learned about this surgery to your family and friends. I only told a select few, but I was fully educated on my decision to do this and I wasn’t really looking for their approval.

I feel similar family mainly thinks its crazy and co workers too, now I see why people don't want to tell people. At first I was like "I don't care what they think", now I'm kind of wishing I never told anyone.... Its odd how people react to a very common procedure that will help improve someone physical and mental health.

Yes I agree, their intentions are good and they don't want to see us in pain or in danger. I think it'll be better when it's done and we're all just moving on. At the moment, they want me to change my mind :-)

My grandpa and boyfriend support me but my aunt and grandma think it's over the top. all that matters to me is that I know that I need this. they still support me and will be there for me but they don't think I really need this.

Hi. I'm due to have my op on 10th October. I'm 16 stone' date=' BMI of 40. I'm 41, have been dieting since my early teens. I currently have a gastric band which will be removed at the same time. I've lost weight in various ways over the years and put it back on, although haven't ever got back up to my heaviest which was 20.7 stone. My F&F think what I'm doing is too drastic. They all have weight problems too so understand the struggle but still, they don't want me to do it - because I'm a grazer and I like my wine, they think the sleeve won't work for me. Any thoughts/your stories appreciated :-) Lx[/quote']

I tend not to worry about others opinions about if something will work for me or not. I'm 52 and I know me better than anyone. I have the advantage of being single and very independent so I do what I want to do.

I ended up telling my entire family. Everyone was very supportive of me and it really made my decision a lot easier. I'm from the south and family is super important to me. I had my surgery a week and a half ago and they have all been calling and emailing to check on me. It's nice. Also, other than my family, I really don't care what anyone else thinks so I just told people I come across. I have no idea why, but I had this strange idea that I needed to go to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned right before surgery (lol) and I told hiim too. He was supportive but warned me to make sure I brush my teeth every time I throw up...lol! I've been super lucky (so far) with that though. My two days in the hospial I was SUPER queasy the whole time, but right before I went home it went away. So far so good! Adjusting has been HARD but not impossible! I'm just glad I researched everything for a long, long, long time! It took me years to finally go through with the surgery and I think knowing everything I could beforehand really helped me to adjust and be as prepared as possible afterwards! Good luck to you making your decision! :D

My parents have both died and I have no siblings. I told some people who I would have to be eating with over the next few months, naturally some of these people told others. I don't mind but I TOLD them, I did not ask them for their opinions. I also did it in a way and at a time that they could not really come back at me with their unwanted opinions. By the time I told them I had a surgery date, was well into my pre-op diet and the wheels were well and truly in motion. Surprisingly, I have had a lot of support from all of these people. I think my M-I-L would like to have stopped me but said nothing negative and even came to visit me in hospital.

Five days after surgery one quite close friend asked me how much I had lost since surgery, I told her and she said "oh is that all". Since then I tell no one how much I have lost or what my weight is. I find it quite confronting when people ask these questions, do they have no social graces, I am not a child I am a mature women with grandchildren. I think it is rude to ask these questions.

Of course, on this forum I am fairly open with weight losses etc, still a bit cagey about my age sometimes!

I love this forum it is my life saver, I have some gurus here who are admirable and funny, enlightening and knowledgeable and I love and thank them for their continuing input.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
