How do you know you're full

Recommended Posts

I don't get that feeling in my stomach that says STOP. Before I know I feel like something is in my throat and sometimes throw up. Please educate me. I can't find anything in the book they sent home with me.

Maybe you need to try slowing down when you eat, which is really the only thing I can think of. Also assuming you are not already taking your time. If you are, then I am no help! Haha Good luck!

I agree with MystiGal, slow down your eating. That may help you pick up on cues. Also watch for: a burp, a hiccup, a runny nose, or sneezing. I know that sounds weird but all of those can be signals for sleeved people (especially new sleevers) that you are full.

Another thing -- after you've eaten about half your meal, start asking yourself after every bite, have I eaten enough? Would I be perfectly happy to push this plate away from me and not eat until my next meal? If so, go ahead and stop. You may need a mental/emotional signal rather than a purely physical one.

Finally, measure and weigh all your food very carefully. When you eat too much of a type of food (dense meat, tuna salad, eggs, whatever) make a note of how much you ate that was "too much." Next time, make sure you eat less - stop before you get to that amount whether you feel full or not.

Good luck to you!

I have to eat slowly (it wasnt easy to get used to). I take a bit maybe every minute. I savor it, enjoy it, taste the heck out of it, chew it to oblivion and wait a minute for the next tasty morsel. When Im about 1 bite from being full I let out a tiny burp. Thats my sign for "you have one more bite". I sometimes stop right there but if I do take that last bite I will get the hiccups and that tells me that I better not take another bite or its coming up.

Yup, what they said above. Here was and still is my routine:

Take a bite half the size I took prior to being sleeved

Put the utensil (or food) down

Chew at least 40 times

Swallow

Evaluate how that bite felt (about 1 minute)

If I feel OK, repeat, but if I am on the fence, I stop

You can always have another meal 30 minutes later, so don't feel like you have to eat like you used to. After all, isn't that part of what got us in trouble in the first place? If we want to make a change, then we have to make a change.

Im 2 wks out and was allowed pureed chicken. Ate it last night and it feels stuck in my chest/throat. I feel stuffed. No nausea, vomiting, fever or pains. I wish I could barf this food up and run. Now I am scared about leaks. I ate mashed potatoes over the weekend and did great with only 7 lil spoons. Maybe I just over ate. I can drink liquids but I feel stuffed since last night.

It also takes your brain a while to register that you are full.. The first time I had scrambled eggs I made 1/2 c of egg beaters... I wasn't able to finish it.... My brain thought I could handle it but alas... Some things, sliders, just slide right through and don't make me full... Yogurt is one of those things...

I don't get a feeling but I know how much I can handle. I never eat over 2.5oz of Protein and 1/4C of veggies in one sitting. I have only twice felt too full and it was very early on (week 2?) if I found I was getting hungry early (I drink at least 16oz of Water between meals and wait a minimum of 2 hours and up to 3 between meals) anyway my first thought would be what did I eat? Was it a slider? Am I thirsty? If I was really good I would add .5oz of Protein to my next meal. I started with 2 oz. I rarely make it thru all my veggies. If I find myself mindlessly eating I stop.

I should say I don't get the runny nose hiccups etc... I do feel full eventually

The food is moving now so I guess I just ate too much chicken. I need to stick to 7 tiny spoons until time progresses. I ate 1/4 of a thigh last night and chopped it. Next time...7 tiny pieces. Thanks everyone.

I am also 2wk post op and given the go at ten dad to start food. First thing I had was chicken and I thought it was killing me. The biggest thing is little bits and give it a chance. With meats it's definitely a minute or so I found. I also think I feel hungry but don't feel full but have noticed a burp and that's when I stop. I also serve myself a little portion and I think between my conscience, the burp, and instinct I feel satisfied with what I've had. Good luck!!

Thanks...the chicken finally settled yesterday evening. I feel great this morning. I have to remind myself....smaller bites...time it....take breaks. Maybe I was just too excited to eat chicken. Lol

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
