hi there

i am thinking about having surgery however couple of questions for those who have had it. My BMI is a little over 30- however i do genuinely need to lose 2 stone, and keep it off! the last part is the bit i struggle with! have had mixed feedback on whether i should have gastric band given my BMI is so "low" and some surgeons saying only take over 35 BMI. so my first question is to anyone out there who has BMI like mine- did it work for you?

second question is around whether you can ever eat "normally" again? I ask this question not because I want to eat through the band but because i want to be able to return to some sort of normal likfe where i go to friends houses for dinner- and whilst i might eat much smaller portion size, I do not want to be accepting an invite to dinner & basically bringing my own food!! I know about the restrictions and only having liquids after surgery moving on to purees etc- but want to know if there is a time when you can ever eat say chicken or fish or even meat again??

would love to hear from other members.

thanks

jane

Hi Jane,

The simple answer is No. it would be a waste of your money and unnecessary surgery. Have you considered the gastric balloon? It is non invasive and is removed after 6 months. It may help you to lose that last bit of weight.

You really don't have enough weight to make it worthwhile for you. And, as you obviously do not want to have restrictions put on what you can eat, then you really should reconsider. It's not a miracle cure. Yes you can have the band deflated when you have got to your preffered weight and if you put weight back on it can be reflated. The band is simply a tool that needs to be worked at just like normal dieting.

I'm sorry to be so blunt but it does seem that so many people think that the band is the easy answer, I have had the band for just over 2 years now and I am still learning how to work with it. Finally seem to have syncopated properly.

I hope this helps you

Suzy

I have to agree with Suzy. I think if you are only 2 stone overweight it would not be easy to get a surgeon to insert a gastric band. Would it be worth the risks? as of course all operations and anaesthetics involve some risk. However it will always remain your choice.

I was 11 stone overweight when I had my band in July this year, and although I have lost over 5 stone at the moment, it is hard work. Yes, I can eat almost any food, and can go out to restaurants etc, there are still some foods like bread and apples that are very painful to eat.

Please, please think very long and hard before you make your final decision. Hope others will be along later to give you their thoughts too.

In friendship.

Susan

hi ladies

i really appreciate your candid responses & for those with a lot more weight to lose than me I must seem like a daft cause!! you have certainly made me rethink a band completely, and maybe I will look at a balloon.

once again thanks for your honest replies and good luck for 2009

I will have to get it sorted soon, although it is a nightmare just b4 christmas>

How are you doing with the weight, how much have you lost?

Hi All, thanks for posting on this site, it has been really useful to read through all your comments.

I'd like to ask you what you think about my choices: I'm 44, and have been overweight all my life, despite feeling like I make good food choices (no biscuits, cakes, crisps in the house etc) and I love salad and veggies. But my eating is emotional, and I have tried again and again without success to lose weight over the years. I've had my bloods done and the doctors don't think it is due to under active thyroid.

I'm 5'4" and 190 lbs, which is 13 stone 10 lbs, roughly, and my BMI is 33. I have a very small frame, and was 8 st 10 lbs when I was a very young teenager, that seemed to be my "normal" weight for years until I left home to go away to school and I think my bad eating habits stem from emotional needs not met at that time and too much food to take the place of activity and interesting things to do at school.

I have yo yo'd between 11 1/2 stone and 13 1/2 stone for the past 20 years

If, as you say, the band is not the full answer, then what is? I have never been able to be successfully on a diet and lose weight for more than a couple of weeks without giving up through lack of motivation (mainly because my weight stays the same, although I eat under 1000 cals a day and exercise like mad)

I am in the South East - if you think I should go for a consultation, where would you suggest? I don't want to go abroad, as I have a busy home life with 4 kids and animals to look after and a very non-supporting husband

Hi stumbled onto to this site tonight after not been able to sleep. I have made the decision to have surgery but Iam totally undecided as to what or where. I live in the west midlands has anyone had banding/bypass surgery in this area. I am going to organise a consultation tomorrow with healthier wieght anybody used them? I so want this done but i really don't want to make the wrong decision and regret it.

Any advise would be great.:tongue2:

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
