4 day post op 20 mins then chest pain

Recommended Posts

Good early morning to everyone.

I am 4 days post op, and I have found that I can get all the liquids down, but about 10 to 20 minutes later, I feel this wave as though everything seems to ride back up toward the asophagas, a bit of chest pain then it goes away. I hope this is not relux.

I've found also after all the fluids during the day, iso pure (yuck) propel, Water, broth...I still get growling hunger noises.

This is normal right?

Everything just has to heal a bit, and If I can just get to those full Fluid days I'll be fine right???

Just wanted to know if anyone else went through this.

Donna B

good morning blownaway,

I wouldnt worry to much. Are you experienceing burning, if not, I don't think it would be reflux. I would try warm liquids today, see if that helps. Like tea, herbal tea, warm chicken broth. Remember tiny, tiny sips. Try not to take in any air with your sips. Try to relax as much as possible. Don't forget, your still healing. Remember, always call your surgeon in doubt, thats what there there for. I wouldnt worry to much, I think you'll be okay.:)

Sounds normal to me.....from my early post-op experience.

To help with the "growlies" I sucked on several popsicles a day...it felt like I was "eating", it helped me get fluids in and there was some nutritional value as I used the delmonte juice ones.

hi.

i used to get that pain in the throat/chest...... i would even experience it in the a.m when i woke up....... its very frustrating and scary.... but it does go away.......

mine was so annoying, when i asked about it not too many people remebered that........ it actually made me think 'what have i gotten myself into' because i thought it was a permanent side effect......

hang in there!

Thanks for all your replies, I'm feeling much better today, drinking warm fluids really help.

I don't know if I can stick to this clear diet for much longer, I really feel like I can eat food as long as it's chewed really well.

However...doctors orders.

juice and beef broth until Wednesday, I'm looking forward to cream of mushroom Soup and non fat starbucks latte, and just a little more variety.

Did any of you try full fluids sooner than the 7 day period?

Hey blownaway... I'm having surgery on Feb 1, but I was told to get Boost Breezer (which I got a Nutrition House). It's high-protein and apparently takes the hunger away. Good luck!

Only a couple more days blownaway. Remember, everything is healing in your tummy. Be careful.

The growling is probably gas, which you will have for a few weeks post-op. Use gas-X. I found that I took huge gulps of Fluid and had to re-learn how to swallow less each time. The pain after 20 min. is probably the "you have had too much" signal. Try sipping your fluids slowly so it takes 20 minutes to drink a glassfull. Warm fluids help reduce the restricted feeling. All this will pass in another week or so. You will have to experiment to be able to know how much to have before you are physiacally full. My body dosn't tell me I'm full till I've overfilled, so I have to pay attention to how much I take in. I also made drinks with Protein Powder, cuz I got really really hungry around day 7. Stick to what the doc tells you. Healing after surgery is really important. It does work, just give it some time.

Hey Donna

I have the same thing as you. terrible gas pains. And the gas x stips are really helping a lot. I am sort of like you, I was dreaming of cheese last night, but alas, I just had some broth. Popsicles are a great help too.

I am back to work today too -Day 4 and feel pretty good. I needed to get moving to get the gas going too.

Call me if you get a chance tonight!

Sally

Hey Sally I was thinking about you yesterday.

Didn't want to call in case you were trying rest.

I'm glad you're back a work.

How were you last few days, last time we spoke, you hadn't slep for 24 hours or so.

Can't wait to meet you tomorrow night.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
