Hard to eat with no liquids....

Recommended Posts

I am just 2 weeks post band, still on liquids until Tuesday....but the thought of not drinking Water, milk or any liquid while I am eating is going to be very difficult....I can handle no carbonated beverages/ that craving is already gone, but nothing??? I am really worried.....

Anyone care to comment on how you have handled? Thanks.

I dont generally drink lots of Water with meals and never did but the thought of not having wine with dinner, ugh. That was enough to put me off banding altogether, lol.

So I still drink it. It makes no difference to me. I also routinely have a coffee right after lunch and it doesnt seem to affect me.

Following orders is usually best, but its not an absolutely set in stone thing that you will feel hungrier if you drink soon after a meal.,

For the most part it hasn't been that difficult for me to follow that rule. Sometimes though, I really need a drink while eating. I have found that hot tea works as long as I don't drink to much and use it as a tool to eat more. Just a few sips seems to do the trick.

Good luck to you.

I agree it is not a must but you don't want to wash down what you are trying to stay full with. I drink during my meals when I need to.

Good luck

It's never bothered me. I had started doing this well before banding as it helps a lot with digestion and keeping my tum from being upset. If you chew enough and don't gulp down your food, you'll find you don't need liquids. And you'll stay fuller longer.

I've done it both ways, I've had sips of drink during a meal and invariably I'll end up eating more, packing my pouch (bad!) and then being hungry soon after.

All not good. Just my .02...your mileage may vary.

That was a HUGE thing for me to give up! Something about hot food and a cold drink.... mmmm.... 7 months out and I still miss it and I count down my hour after eating until I can have a nice cold drink. BUT getting in to an 18/20 shirt this morning when I was in a 28/30 makes it all worth it.

I try and drink a glass or 2 of Water before the meal. Then I usually am not so thirsty during the meal. Sometimes I will sip throughout the meal, usually during times where the food just sits there after 2 small bites and another will make me PB (2 bites is not a meal, I don't care what planet you are on). Sometimes if I drink with a meal, it will CAUSE me to PB, so it really varies for me. I'm very careful not to use drinking with my meal to allow me to eat more, and when I insist on drinking with a meal, I also insist on not snacking for the next 3 to 4 hours, no matter how I feel.

I miss drinking while eating, but it is difficult for me. Sometimes I can sip very tiny sips and am ok, but if I do more than that, it hurts.

Congrats on the 18/20!!! You go girl!

I know all docs are different but mine said I'd be ok to stop drinking 5 minutes before I eat, and cam resume 20 minutes after. Of course, if I need a sip or two mid-meal I take it... but usually - I'm OK!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
