Gallbladder removal?

Recommended Posts

How come some people get their gallbladder removed at the same time they have the sleeve surgery? What are the benefits?

I had mine removed two months after my sleeve surgery. My surgeon told me that if she has a patient with gallstones before surgery she will always take out the gallbladder at the same time because she says they always have issues. I did not have gallstones before surgery, they developed after surgery, so I was lucky enough to have two surgeries in two months... ugh!

Aww! That must have been horrible!

I wasn't quite sure why I was given the option to have it removed lol. I've never had any trouble with it. But maybe ill have it out so I don't have to go through the same situation.

Thank you!

I am 11 months out and had to have mine removed last week. He also removed some scar tissue and made some alterations to my hernia repair (from original surgery). I have to say it sucks because I am back on a liquid diet mainly due to the hernia issue. Knowing what I know now and if I was given the option, I would of had it removed in the beginning.

Some doctors remove it as routine, but that is falling out of favor since you really do benefit from having a gallbladder so if you CAN keep it you should try to. Most people who have it removed at the time of Bariatric surgery, already have some stones so the doctor just goes ahead and takes it out at the same time as surgery.

Many people develop gallstones during rapid weight loss but not everyone. Some doctors prescribe medication that can help prevent the development of gallstones.

My surgeon said that removing a healthy gall bladder was frowned upon. I was very happy to find out that my abdominal ultrasound showed gall stones so my surgeon would take out my gall bladder at the time of my sleeve & then I wouldn't have to worry about it later. I wasn't familiar with the symptoms of cholecystitis, so I don't know if I ever had any of them. I may be a nurse, but I worked NICU & didn't work with patients with cholecystitis. It turned out that my gall bladder was huge & had obviously been inflamed for years. It was so adherent to my liver & surrounding tissues that it took over an hour to free it up. It had at least 4 large stones & several smaller ones. I was told they had to cut it into 3 pieces to get it out & still had to enlarge the incision where they removed my stomach to get those pieces out.

I'm experiencing a lot of nausea 4 months post op. No pain though. But I come from a family where all of the women have their gallbladders removed. My surgeon is sending me for gallbladder ultrasound. Whoopie! Something else for me to look forward to (:rolled eyes)!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
