Chronic Diarrhea, Lactose, Whey, Soy Intolerance - HELP!

Recommended Posts

I am getting so fed up and really low. I am 3+ months out and still having chronic diarrhea whenever I eat much of anything. Cant do whey or soy without diarrhea and nausea. NUT has taken me off almost all dairy due to lactose intolerance. So pretty much leaves me meat, meat, and more meat!!

I get 60g a day of Protein and try to keep up on my Water but so tired of diarrhea and so tired of meat! Breakfast is really hard because I'm not a morning eater anyway, but there's not much choice that's breakfast-like, and whatever I do eat generally causes tummy distress. NUT recommended Weight Control oatmeal but you've gotta mix it with something, and soy milk and 1% milk causes the diarrhea. Can't even think about eggs early in the am.

I'm starting to wonder if all the Vitamins are contributing. I can't seem to get a handle on the diarrhea even though I've cut like EVERYTHING out. So tired of this and really hope the lactose intolerance goes away like many here have said.

Anyone have any ideas what else I can do? BTW, on top of all that, losing VERY slowly!! :(

Is there anyway that you could be gluten intolerent? Wheat Rye Barely? Those were my symptoms before I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease.

I don't know, it's never been a problem before surgery. That would be all I need -- one more huge group to not be able to eat:(

What is the testing for it like?

The initial test is a blood test. And if you test positive they will want to do a colonoscopy (biopsy) to confirm. But once you cut out the gluten it is like night and day.

I haven't been sleeved yet, but I also never had a problem until a year ago. Then BAM! took them 5 months to figure it out.

It is worth looking into.

I've developed lactose intolerance too and I eat weight control oatmeal for breakfast about 3 days out of the week. You can mix it with Water. I usually get the banana bread flavor.

I've been lactose intolerant for years now, but I can drink/eat dairy with lactaid pills. Maybe worth trying that? Sorry you're having such a hard time.

I have had limited success with the lactase tablets, meh.

The Protein waters and Isopure are whey, so they are out. It's pretty limiting:(

I think the weight control oatmeal w Water might work, I'll try. The other meals I can handle doing meats but I am just not ready to surrender and have shrimp for breakfast, lol.

You might look at Sun Warrior Protein powder. It's a vegan Protein Powder that has no whey and no soy, but it's said to have all the branch amino acids. I'm pre-op and I know tastes change after surgery, but I hate Protein supplements now and actually find the Sun Warrior quite tasty. I've blended it with bananas and mangos, along with some ice and almond milk.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
