Doing this alone? (post op care)

Recommended Posts

i was told that even though its "outpatient" surgery and you usually dont stay overnight, that i could not drive back to my house (40 miles away).

Im concerned about what to do.

I dont have any friends or family to help out.

I thought about setting up a taxi to take me home, and while it could be very expensive, it would at least solve the problem. Anyone do this? or have experience with how to do this?

what are some of the issues you ran into? How did you solve them?

Hi,

I am having the same issue. I have my escort settled for the day I go in on Tuesday the 23rd, but do not have an escort home.

I plan to call a taxi service and ride comfortably.

The goal is to get home. My husband is picking up the kids, and I don't

have anyone else. I hope this works out well.

You are not alone! :)

Whatabout checking in to some of the services that offer temporary home health aides. That might be something. They would help you get home and settled, and check in on you and take care of any additional needs you have.

Im wondering about how incapacitated ill be, and a little nervous, but i think it will be okay.

I was going to do that, too and the hospital told me NO! They said that the drivers don't want to be help liable for anything that might "go wrong" on teh way home. You come out on Narcs and can vomit regardless, let alone the jostling ride home. Looking back, I probably would have been just fine. They also told me that I really should have someone with me for awhile once home. (They said 12-24) Again- it was the narcotic issue as well as helping with things around the house. I spent the night and don't know how people do it as day surgery. I needed the nurses help to pee the first couple of times and getting out of bed was awful. Plus- I loved being hooked up to the IV fluids so I stayed hydrated. I couldn't leave until I drank 50 ounces as it was.

I'm wondering if you have a church that you belong to. I know mine helps with rides. Catholic Community Services will help people in need and you don't have to be Catholic.

Best of luck! I almost chose to go without help and took a friend into confidence a few days before because of what the hospital said. i'm glad i did.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
