The frustration of it all

Monday marks my 6 week post op date, and to be honest, I seem to have more bad days than good. Everywhere I look I see food I can neither tolerate physically, nor have room in my Protein goals to have. My wife and I went to the store today to do our weekly grocery shopping, and as we passed through the produce, I found myself longing for fresh fruits and vegetables. We went down a few more aisles, and I saw a Pasta with cheese sauce side dish and thought to myself, you can't have that because the opportunity cost of losing out on the protein is too high. I can't seem to handle much more than 2 ounces of solid food, and with this limitation in-place, I cant find joy in eating- much the opposite. I don't like meal times. If I could take in everything IV I would at this point. Today, I really wish I hadn't gotten this done.

One of the hardest things for a lot of people is severing their relationship with food. The joy of eating. The dependency and regularity of it all. I'm happy to read that you're continuing to make good choices in the face of all these complicated feelings. Bravo, and keep up the good work. You may find it helpful to find a counselor to talk to about things if you continue to struggle. This was one of the issues I discussed with mine. Best of luck with everything! Hang in there!

Just remember why you started this new journey.

1) become healthy

2) loose weight

3) etc

Your mind is a your strongest ally and enemie at the same time. Train it to stop thinking about food the way you used too.

Only you can break the bad habits!! Best of luck

Remember this super restriction is only temporary. Use this time to find the healthy Protein dense foods you do like, low calorie drinks that are soothing, and other activities to replace the joy you got from eating. You are still healing.

At more than two years out and goal weight, I enjoy almost everything I did pre-op, in limited quantities. I do remember the first summer post op. I love fresh fruit, esp. stone fruits and they made me sick. I missed the entire season for peaches, nectarines, and plums. But the next year I was back at the farmers market!

I haven't had the surgery yet, and I'm not sure of the post open requirements but, I'm just wondering if you can have baby food? Usually the fruits are delicious. I'm just throwing this out there, at the same time making sure I hear the plus and negatives of the procedure. I hate to hear your having a bad day. I hope it gets better soon.

Patience, my friend. You will get there. I had my first salad at about 3.5 months out and it was the best thing I ever put in my mouth. I could only eat 1/3 of a Panera 1/2 salad, but it was delicious and very satisfying.

I had A LOT of trouble moving through the food stages. I was stuck on liquids for three weeks and then pureed/mushies for three more. I moved to soft at 6 weeks, but threw it all up almost every time. If I could hold 2 ounces, I was doing fabulous. At my three month mark, things really opened up and my world changed.

You are far too close to a new life to regret it!! Take it one day at a time and look for recipes that you will enjoy. The fruits and veggies will come. More importantly, good health will come and you will be so happy!

Hang in there man, things will get better. Protein is important but not everything. I put hydration above protein. I once knew a girl who went 90 days drinking ONLY Water. Yeah she did get super skinny but her body bounced right back just fine so I don't stress it if I have a day with lower protein. Today my partner and I went to Jasons Deli because I was hungry (I am 12 days post op) and I had them give me a bowl of broccoli chedder (with most of the broccoli taken out). I ate about 6-7 bites and gave the rest away. I was satisfied. I did some shopping and came home and had a Protein shake. Don't let this get to you. It's a change and if you're anything like me CHANGE SUCKS but we can adapt. This is all about being able to adapt.

Hi calicojack42 I can understand your frustration. Trust us.. this phase will pass. to lose the maximum amount of weight you must follow the food phases. You'll want to use this time to learn to control your food urges. Food is out there and all around us. I'm not sure if your in the situation, but most are having this surgery because we have possibly lost our abilty or have a very difficult time with control over our food urges. Check the site for food choices during your stage. look for variety. I'll be honest at 6 weeks out you can't eat like normal and you'll want some things you just can't have. Your life for a little while will be Protein with Protein Drinks. eggs can be made in a few different ways, I loved egg drop Soup. I purchased protein soup.. all things to get in my protein. You'll really want to use this time as designed, you can 't get this time back and this and the next few months are your opportune times to lose the maximum amount of weight. Hang in there..

Well don'y ruin your fun have a day to eat what you want and get back on the wagon afterwards. I have had to do this as well and I feel much better. Some days I make the Protein goal and some I don't but overall I'm loosing weight and I'm healthy. Don't let this make you rethink your new relationship with food.< /p>

That's me, sleeved Aug 12. I dread mealtimes now, but I know it's going to get better. Life is tuna salad and protein drinks. Hang in there! If we can get through this, we have the whole world ahead of us. BTW, it doesn't even work to cheat LOL. I can't keep anything down that I'm not supposed to eat. But we'll get through it :)

I'm not sleeved yet but I'm training my mind now because I have the same fear and I've just admitted to myself I do like food.... But I know I will love being able to do more like go on vacations and not be tired from just packing the car, going to the park, going out in public with my husband, buying clothes and being able to wear more than just my fat clothes, living life to the fullest with my kids,,,, I can't wait to get this started so I can finally live life and eat to fuel my events not just live to eat :-)!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

      Woohoo! I have 7 more days till surgery, So far I am already down a total of 20lbs since I started this journey.
