so I finally figured out NUT =nutritionalist...

Recommended Posts

So I meet with my nutritionalist and she mapped everything out for me from a preop diet to the steps of post op. My ONLY concern is that she is not physically fit herself. Now don't get me wrong, I respect that she knows what she is talking about as my Physician is ultimately the one who oversees my health; however it's just a little concerning to know that she doesn't really practice what she preached. I really hope this doesn't sound rude, just wondering if anyone else's NUT was over weight & did it matter to you?

My nut - here we call them dieticians - is a tall, slim, healthy looking guy. But years ago, apparently he was morbidly obese and reduced his weight through good nutrition and exercise, things he still lives by today.

I was reassured by his professionalism but I also knew that he had been where I was but made no judgment on how I chose to resolve the issue for me. That might have been a problem if I had felt otherwise...

We don't know the backstory to the people who help us, it all comes down to whether you believe in their professional competence. If this has impacted on your confidence in her, you need to tackle this - otherwise, take her advice and focus on you :-)

My NUT is like 5'7 and 120 pounds. She is skinny skinny skinny. I like her, she is very good and understanding. She is full of great recipe suggestions as well.

Like Indigo, my nutritionist used to be a big-boy, too. He tackled his by practising what he preaches. I also got the impression he'd also been 'banded', too.

Either way, I feel that people who have walked a few steps in your shoes can identify with your predicament and can assist you more effectively.

As for yours, you really don't know what has rendered her a little on the unhealthy side. Could be anything. She could be taking steroids, she could have thyroid issues.. As you know yourself, the list of culprits are endless. If you think her weight might potentially undermine her credibility - call her out on it. If she shrugs and says 'yeah, I really should practice what I preach', then it might raise an eyebrow. However, you're gonna feel pretty bad if she pipes up with 'yeah, I'm a recovering cancer patient and they've still got me on steroids which makes me bloated'...

I would say judge it by her professionalism, confidence and credibility of service delivery. If you're in doubt of that, then elect for someone else - as is your right.

The best of luck :)

Thank you all...I'm not going to say anything, because being overweight myself. I know how hard it is to have someone say something about the elephant in the room..like you have suggested, I'm going to just focus on the positive information she is giving me & useit to my benefit. It's high time I learn to moment own business for the positive changes necessary for my future. I really appreciate the honesty & good advice

Mine is fit and trim. Years ago I did a Dr supervised low cal liquid diet and lost 70 lbs which was gained back and more. We met weekly for lab work, weigh ins and a dietician group meeting. The dietician was young but obese and kept saying it was "baby weight" from having kids. Her youngest was 5 yrs old. As we were preparing to transition back to food she would say things like "you should keep cheese pizzas in your freezer for nutritional snacks". Nothing like that was in our prepared guidelines they gave us. So it was a bit off-putting. If yours knows her stuff that is different of course and maybe she just needs a VSG to help her out :)

Size has nothing to do with knowledge or skill level or professionalism. Just cuz a Nut is skinny, doesnt mean they know jack.

I want any of my doctors or advisors to have experience and expertise and compassion , I dont care what they look like...

My nut actually had the gastric bypass herself, and then became a nut after. She was almost to skinny...but I think it helps her to feel more empathy for the patients, because she knows exactly what it is like.

Glad you realized what a nut really is, so now you don't think we are all talking about our nuts, and sounding like we are nutty! Lol :)

she is not physically fit herself.

mzmbee

i totally get what you are saying

you know she is on the right track, showing, explaining to you what you need to do

sounds like you know she is good/knowledgeable

its true of course that that is the most important thing - that she is smart and can help/advice you

that being said................

if i continually went to the same hair dresser - and her hair was not cut well, shaped, clean - you know what i mean

i would be concerned questioning things too - even though she does a great job on me

its like, why don't you practice what you preach???

its true what OP say

the most important factor for you - is that she knows what she is talking about (which she does)

but the other "issue" i do understand

its a prejudice we have had against us

but...in this case, it could/is maybe hard to listen to someone telling you how to eat right et al - but she doesn't do it for herself

its strange, might be a perfectly good reason, but..........

bottom line, you are understandably allowed your feelings - but don't let it interfere with the fact that she will do right by you

good luck

kathy

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
