Surgery Question ?

Recommended Posts

Ahhhh.. no. I thought when she said "post-op" she meant for the rest of your life, after surgery. But if she meant during the post-op diet, that would make more sense... because that stuff is clear... ahhh... yes, I get it now.

I do have some unflavoured "Unjury" Protein powder.. I don't know if it would be clear dissolved in juice or whatever, cause I only had it in milk. They say you can put it in warm liquids like Soup or coffee.. but I've yet to try that.

Anyways, yeah, Isopure sounds good... I just wish there was a GNC near me. Are they pre-mixed drinks? Do they TASTE like Gatorade? :) How pricey is pricey?

I will look for that Protein Powder. I have been trying to find a good one and it seems like every bottle I pick up is for mammoth bodybuilders, not weight-loss minded me. So thanks for the tip.

As for the Isopure, it is about 7 dollars for a bottle and is pre-mixed - it pretty much looks just like Gatorade. (I haven't tasted it yet. I didn't want to waste it until I actually needed a $7 drink!) Same flavours, etc. I justified the price by looking at it as just another expense to add on to the already insane amount of money I will be shelling out for this surgery. Plus, I can't think of another way to get Protein in during the clear liquid phase, and I am told that protein intake is an important aide to healing. Who knows... I am so new at this, I might be wrong!

all the power to ya if anyone wants to spend the $$ on Isopure but not me man. There are soooooooooooooo many varieties of Protein powder out there and Protein drinks.....for me it just wasn't worth it to pay that large sum of money; it is a complete rip off!

IMHO.

I did get Protein Powder at GNC but the generic brand and I had it (& still have it) in drinks and I literally got about 50 times more for the same price than I would have if I got something like Isopure. I wasn't worried about the calories because post op....I was hard pressed to get ANY calories in it and you do need 'em.....so it was a bonus for me....calories and Protein.< /p>

All I'm sayin' is don't get sucked into paying ridiculous prices if you don't want to; there are too many other avail options!

Hi Yoda,

I totally agree - it IS ridiculous to spend that much money. I just can't think of anything better for the clear liquid phase and this was suggested to me by the folks at the TLBC. Do you have any suggestions? I would love to find something else... My surgery is tomorrow, so I guess I am in a bit of a panic here trying to get everything together... (And/or just panic-ed in general!)

Otherwise, what was the best tasting protein powder you found?

Anything you can suggest would be great (and tracking it down will give me something to keep me busy!). Thanks!

well, they are all right. I tried them befor my surgery on friday because I did not want to think I would drink them, and not be able to because of the taste. I mixes crystalight ice tea with the lemonaid and it was good. The souple apple I mixed berry blend.

Does anyone know how the Isopure tastes ? It should be good for $7.00

What about Special K Protein Water ? anyone try it ?

I can't believe it was $7.00 dollars for a drink !

I bought Stacher 2 Protein Water from Walmart for $1.97. It comes in lemonaid & sour apple. 20g of Protein for 575ml, 80 calories per bottle.

Good luck tomorrow

Now I feel like a complete idiot! I just assumed (based on the way it was described to me) that Isopure was the only protein Water on the market. Hmm.... I'm wondering if GNC takes returns...

What is the deal with Propel? Is that protein water also?

No, it's not (a Protein water)

I had the Stacker too...it wasn't great, but not bad. I'd rather have it than a thick Protein drink! I should have tried adding crystal light. The lemonade one I got was very sour! I don't know if my Walmart has them. I found the one I got at a Shoppers' in Calgary.

Honestly, the only protein I had after right after surgery was after the Clear liquids phase (a few days), and it came in the form on cottage cheese and milk!

There are dozens of Protein powders on the market as well as Protein pre-made liquids....form GNC, to costco to Wallmart and everywhere inbetween. TLBC just gives Isopure as an example.

Don't forget....you can put any Protein powder in a clear liquid and you are all set......

For me, I didn't like the taste of the powder in much of anything but stuck it out immediately post op.....once I could have full fluids it was better.....cause I could have it in milk and make a smoothie etc.....that's why the taste isn't all that important later on. Later, I would mix the protein powder (choc) in with choc Ensure.....for a Meal Replacement. I still do that for Breakfast sometimes.

Dpending what you are albe to eat post-op, yo may want to try the nectar protien juices. They are a powder that you mix with Water and they have a whack of flavors.

There are also places you can order samples.

I am planning on ordering some, just to keep things interesting. I am not a hure Breakfast eater and am hoping to use these in the morining.

Hey guys I just seen today at Walmart, Boost Protein drink/boxes , different fruit flavors....6 for $10.50. Has any one tried them?I'm guessing they'd get you through the clear liquid 48 hours.

I will have to check them out. How were they for carbs?

You know, lots of people drink things like Boost and Ensure, doesn't have to mean anything 'funny' is going on with you! If they ask, say you don't have time for a healthy breakfast/snack/whatever, and this gives you what you need, quickly and easily.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
