ARG! Food is evil today and restaurants stink!

Recommended Posts

ARG! 1st I'm irritated that there are people with the sleeve who can have pizza, eggs, cereal(with liquid not dry) and don't feel sick when eating most food. I'm 7 months out and there are a lot of foods that don't agree with me...ALOT. I was so unbelievably hungry today and every single meal or snack ended in disaster today. I was out in the world, instead of at home, and realized that every single restaurant around didn't have any non fried, fresh food that wasn't a salad (lettuce and all its friends hate me in a vicious kind of way) and wasn't just a piece of grilled chicken. I just broke down and cried. My husband felt bad cause he knows how much I struggle and he wishes there was a solution. I felt so bad about us going out and not eating that I tried a teriyaki place we love but I wasn't feeling it. I only ate maybe an ounce of chicken then o...m...gosh. I got shaking violently ill and had to rush to my car because I didn't want to cry or vomit in front of people. 1st time that has ever happened in a restaurant. Just very frustrated and not feeling well. and well...this is really the only place I can complain and have the hope someone understands.

Wow are you dealing with any anxiety issues concerning your lifestyle change? At 7 months out I would think by now you may be able to enjoy at least something you like. Hopefully this will improve but if it doesn't you will need to adjust to your new relationship with food. I hope you do improve and pray that you and your family will remain supportive during your time of need.

aww thanks you guys. I do have anxiety about food. I'm anxious over having to think about it so much. How's my stomach feeling? Can I eat that? and the biggie...what do I want...oh gosh that question seriously gets to me. My recipes are limited right now...mostly because my stomach and brain are on the fritz ;) Thanks for letting me have my internet screaming hitting head on desk moment lol

Perhaps your anxiety is causing your body to react in this way. I know everyone is different etc. but there should at least be a handful of things you could choose to eat on a menu? Fish options? Vegetarian options? Sometimes I even order the cheese and biscuits which are a dessert option and I have mainly the cheese... If you're not so anxious you will find yourself relaxing and enjoying a meal more. When I had my band, I used to be terribly anxious and almost without fail, I'd walk in a restaurant, and even the first mouthful of Soup would have me vomiting in the bathroom. Eating out can still be a very pleasurable experience. I'm off to meet a friend at an Italian restaurant this afternoon.. I'm having roasted monkfish and prawns on a bed of sweet potato mash. Yes I'll only probably manage half the portion or less and a mouthful of mash, but I'm still out enjoying myself.. It can be done :)

I am out at a family style brunch right now so I feel your pain. Hope I don't fill up on the couple appetizers. I feel a doggie bag in my future! There still are options and often the chef cook can modify a dish for you. Don't fry, omit an ingredient. I am also ok with throwing out the bread from a sandwich or leaving the lettuce from a salad. Give it a try. I hope this gets be tt er for you.

So sorry your having trouble. It is important to be able to go out with family and friends and enjoy yourself in that social setting without feeling frustration and sick. How are you with fish? I found backed fish worked well for me at 7 months. It's not has hard to get down as chicken and still has the Protein. Most places serve some for of backed Talapia or Salmon. Be sure your not drinking before or during your meal. I also found solice with Chili. I've been at a restaurant and couldn't find a baked meal, and asked to see the manager.. then politely asked for an item that was on the menu as fried and asked them to bake it..they were more than happy to comply. What do you eat at home that goes down well? Hang in there.. Speaking from a 2 year sleever,, it really gets better and your tool will eventually become your friend.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
