Is it supposed to hurt this much?

Recommended Posts

I got banded on the 17th, we are now Friday the 20th I believe and I'm still in sooooooooooo much pain. I'm home now (got home today) and no matter how I position myself, I am not comfortable.

I'm starting to wonder if I did the right thing..

What kind of pain are you feeling? It's not uncommon - at all - for the pain from gas to hurt very noticeably and for a while - days if not weeks - after surgery. Is it general soreness that is just persistent?

More info please. :)

It's where my band is, basically, where I got cut, where it hurts. I'm had a few sips of Soup earlier and I immediately felt sick and im guessing there's gas as well because the nurses told me there was going to be. Maybe Im' just sensitive..but then again, it's only been 3 days. I am never comfortable, no matter what position I sleep in

Were you given any pain meds, and are you using them?

I think you're describing your port incision. It is, 99% of the time, the sorest of the incisions, but I've not heard many people stating that regardless of position they can't get any relief. I know for me personally, my incisions only hurt when I was moving my abdominal muscles - standing up, sitting down, sneezing, coughing, etc. While at rest I felt nothing.

Please call your surgeon & discuss. It could be nothing, and it could be something. And only your surgeon is qualified to answer.

I hurt for a bit over a week. Have you tried laying on the opposite side of the port on or against a pillow. That helped me loads. My soreness of the port just eased really well about 10 days ago. I had surgery on Dec 13th.

I just had my first fill, and can tell that it is helping. Finally I might start losing something other than inches. PHEW Thank God!

:clap2:

I had to sleep on my recliner for a week after my sergury.

It will get better. You will make it.

You will look back at this and laugh a few weeks from now.

Keep fighting.

The pillow thing actually works well, if you don't move at all during the time you're sleeping. I found that I'm most comfortable on my couch with my legs propped up, which sucks for my roomate cause she has no place to sit, but thanks guys! I appreciate the advice, it has helped me lots.

I was banded on the 15th, and I found/find that my best rest comes when I am elevated and not laying flat. I had a pulling sensation at my port site when I was laying flat.

And as for the gas pains, I walked and took Maalox. For me, the gas pains eased up tremendously by the fifth day out, and only getting better to where it's almost nonexistent.

Good luck!

I was banded on January 16th and am still a little bit sore around my port-incision but the worst pain I've experienced so far has been the pain in my shoulder because of gas - it was almost unbearable lastnight. The nurses told me that walking or exercising would help so I went for a good walk lastnight but I can appreciate that it's difficult to motivate yourself to move around when you're feeling miserable. Hope everyone who's been banded in the last week is feeling much better already. I'm waking up in the mornings and am delighted that whatever pain or discomfort I'm experiencing is less than I felt at the same time the day before!! Onwards and upwards.

Definitely take that pain medication! that's what it's there for. they also say that it's easier to keep ahead of the pain--than to catch up with it. so what if you're a little woozy--you're SUPPOSED to sleep and heal. and drink liquids.

Unless you have reaction to the pain meds--i say "better living through medication." i've just finished 2 wks after surgery--and i was sure uncomfortable for the first week. glad to have that vicodin!

it gets better people--but you don't have to grit your teeth--take the medication--you won't become a drug addict on one week of meds. even if you take it every 4-6 hours--no problem. just be COMFORTABLE!

I was banded on Jan 8th. I had the worst time learning to sip not gulp my Water. Gulping air makes the gas thing even worse. You do it without thinking. My doctor suggested I use a ducolax supposistory as it gets the intestines to move in the right direction rather than having the spasims you are feeling now. Gax X did not work but the suspository did pretty good. Hope this works.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
