Morbidly Obese Toddler Undergoes Gastric Bypass Surgery

Recommended Posts

So did he have gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy? The story states both procedures. Just curious to know which one. I've heard of the sleeve being introduced at the pediatric level, albeit not quite this young, but this could be a normal procedure to help curb obesity specifically in the US.

Wow! Just wow! That child should have been taken away from his parents, period. It is child abuse to over feed your child. It isn't cute, or funny! This is just sad sad sad! That poor child is a victim! :(

The story did mention both, but described the sleeve. I hope it helps that child, but I sure wish it hadn't come to that either.

I worked in a Pediatric Clinic years ago. A boy was brought in for his exams in a stroller starting at babyhood. As he got older, he was still in the stroller and got bigger and bigger. The family was of either Arabic or East Indiab ethnicity. The father would not stop giving the child treats. The MD tried everything but the father wouldn't stop. He finally refused to continue care due to non compliance. I would hope that nowadays in the USA this would legally be considered child abuse and more could be done to help the innocent child. This is definitely child abuse in my book.

I was once at a Burger King with my family....as a treat. We don't frequently allow our children to eat fast food, because it is unhealthy. There was a family there that had two children that were both obese. One of the kids had just finished eating his super sized adult meal, and said to his dad that he was still hungry, so the dad went up to the counter and ordered the kid another adult sized meal! I was floored! It was all I could do not to strange those parents! Because of my genetics I have always been super conscious to male sure that my children always eat healthy food, and to know about portions. I rarely allow junk food in the house, but when I do the kids know that not only do they have to ask before they are allowed to have any, but they also know that they have to get a snack sized baggy to put the junk food into, to make sure they don't eat to much. Some may think I am being to harsh, or overly protective....but I don't want my children to ever be obese. I truly believe it is child abuse to allow your children to constantly eat junk food, and not teaching them about portions and nutrition. In my opinion it is just as bad as providing them with drugs and alcohol. Parents need to wake up about their child's eating habits. This generation is the first one that the life span of adults will be longer then the life span of the kids! That is so sad! It truly is heart breaking! :(

So sad. I know my eating habits did not allow my kids to always make the healthiest choices as easy as they should be. They are getting better though. The family needed major intervention. Sadly I have a feeling the boy will have complications as the family is not making follow up appointments.

Sad but his parents are clearly to blame by not doing what they were advised. This is messed up.

How terrible to permanently alter a child's anatomy without the child being old enough to understand the consequences. If this child was permitted to get into this unhealthy state to begin with, what makes anyone think the parents will follow the postoperative rules or the child will for that matter? This kid will have deficiencies down the road at best.

I don't believe this story is real. Gawker.com is like The Onion.com and produces a lot of satirical news reports.

It would be interesting to see how many children come from normal size parents and overweight parents. I was always very careful to make sure my children were a normal size, had a lot of activites outdoors and kept very little Snacks in the house. I didn't want for them what I was enduring. As a result my children grew up healthy and normal size and are to this day. I can't believe that parents would let a child get that big much less so young. I too think it is very sad that his entire life is being changed without his consent or ability to say no. I hope this isn't true.

I looked online and several news agencies were carrying the story.

Not to be argumentative, but Gawker is not a satire site.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.
