Recommended Posts

Have had problems with depression my whole life. At one time yrs ago went to psychiatrist for awhile and did the regemine of pills. I would get better for a couple months and then they did not work and she would add another pill. Needless to say after 9 months I just weaned myself back off. For the little inprovment the side effects were not worth it. Now 10 months after surgery I am suffering again very bad. I am depressed and very angry about life period. I am a witch to everyone. I need to get back on something so I am asking you all your advice before I go to a dr. I need name of medicines that are working for some of you with few side effects and that won't cause weight gain. Thanks for your help.

Based on the composite experience of many, many of my friends, the two that are weight neutral and have no sexual side effects seem to be Wellbutrin extended release, and Pristiq. Almost everyone I know who tried Prozac found that it worked but for both men and women, caused some kind of sexual disjunction, primarily inability to achieve orgasm. Wellbutrin is cheap, at doses under 300 has minimal risks and side effects. If that doesn't work, Pristiq with its impact on 2 neurotransmitters seems to work better with few side effects. As a disclaimer, yes I have a phd in psychology, but I am not a shrink nor a psychiatrist, just someone who reads a lot and cares about this stuff. YMMV.

Glad you're going to have it seen too.

I have been on Effexor for years. Since the surgery I have cut back to a minimum dose. It is more animating than some of the drugs. For some it causes anxiety but it keeps me awake. When I took prozac years ago I slept most of the time.

I have been on Wellbutrin since 2005. Many times I thought I was good and stopped taking it and within two weeks I hit rock bottom. It doesnt make you gain weight and doesn't seem to effect my sexual drive. It's also used to treat ADHD so that's an added benefit. Feel free to ask me any questions. I will have to change to the non extended release after my surgery.

I too am on Well butrin and I too tried to go off because I was doing so good, but that wasn't the best decision , but I am back on it and doing good. I am so fat I can't tell if it made me gain weight but I don't think it was the WB. Good Luck.

In response to Mokee, I have not had surgery yet and at this point not sure what I will do, Depression and Anxiety has set in in the last week and I am having a very hard time. Crying most of the time, Just anything can set it off,( I of course try to hide it from everyone because they don't take it serious) I am on 300 mil of Well-Butrin every day, and my Dr. asked me Friday if I thought I needed something else , I told him no but boy had I wished I had something today. I am so scared that if I go thru with this surgery it will trigger it bad and I can't take that. I do know a lot of people have this surgery and then at some point Depression sets in, and People can be so nasty about it sometimes when someone says they are having bouts of depression, but until they walked in someone's shoe who has had this awful disease they really can NEVER know what it is like. Really I don't know why I replied to your post and said all of that but I do hope and pray yours gets better and I feel for you. My prayers are with you and everyone else who is dealing with this. Good Luck.

Celexa for serotonin , Wellbutrin for dopamine. Both work well alone and better together.

I was sleeved in February the weight loss is going well I'm down 90 lbs but I have noticed I'm getting more bouts of depression. I've been diagnosed with bi poler and depression years ago . I take only celexa and the occasional xanax. I was wondering if it is normal to maybe have my celexa increased.

Hi mokee. I have that problem with every antidepressant on the market. I take it for a while: it works and stops working fairly fast. Switch and see the same story. Finally stopped all. Still struggle with constant depression.

Sleeved 12-5-11 and lowest weight was 188 while I was on vacation in july. Now up to 194. Am going to try a support group for depressed older people in October. I think the whole deal sucks...but thats my monkey brain talking.

You sound like me b4 surgery only u look alot younger. I was over 425 for a long time. I also ate antidepressant and anti-anxiety pills. Guess what? I had the surgery. Yeah I was actually afraid to go home from hospital. Didnt believe any of the support group I put together for me was going to guve a crap abt me. But most of them did. I am between 188 and 195 now.

I went to wales and britain with every pill in my arsenal and I did not need to take one. When I got on the plane and buckled seat belt I started crying. The last time I flew I needed 2 seats and 2 seatbelt extenders.

You cant deny the ups of losing weight. But I cannot vouchbfor maintaining it being easy. It isnt. And no, I still am depressed. But there is a glimmer of lite in sll the sh*t.

Your choice. Hope its the right one for you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
