Home from vsg i dont know how to eat (day 4)

Recommended Posts

So I got sleeved on 9/16 and I came home last night. I started my period during surgery "due to the trauma of surgery" said my doctor and nurse. So I am not even sure what i am feeling in my new tummy: hunger? Pain? Cramps? I am so confused.

Yesterday was my last "official" day of Clear liquids. I tried beef broth and get really sick and had some sf Jello. Last night I sleep in my own bed and had to get up every 2 hours to pee and/or readjust. Also I was/am having a bit of coughing that is so scary like I'm going to pop my stiches/staples. The most uncomfortable night of my life.

Now this morning I get to start soft foods and I am completely lost. How can I get at least 40 grams of Protein in? What should I eat?

Your post-op plan is way different than mine. But you're 3 days out so I wouldn't push it too much. Soft foods on my plan is blenderized foods (with Proteins being most important). I had my VSG on the 10th and I won't be able to have pureed foods until 10/1. Have Protein Shakes in between meals to get your Protein in.

You're starting soft foods already? That's fast for your first week. chicken, fish, Beans, etc all have good Protein. Or try a Primeir protein shake...30g right there

Here is my program....

Hospital stay: clear liquid diet

Week 1 & 2: liquid diet

Week 3: pureed phase

Week 4 & 5: soft food phase

Week 6 & beyond: 3 small meals with 2 Snacks - low calorie intake.

Very important to get at least 60 ounces of Water and hit your Protein intake daily. Hope this helps...

I leave the hospital today also. My diet will be full liquids, runny puréed foods. Full liquids are puddings, cream Soups, baby food. Puréed are babyfoods, added brothers to make them runny. tuna pureed with nonfat mayo. When I come back for my follow up next week, I will move to soft foods.

Honestly, In the beginning I never got close to my target protein... I would try Isopure, (kind of like gatorade with protein) the bottle has 40 grams of Protein and it may take you all day to drink it. It's a start, you could try Fage greek yogurt, but go slow.

You could also call your NUT & ask for help and ideas...

Good Luck!

Make Water your priority these first few days. I took in hardly any Protein the first week but plenty of water and it definitely helps with the healing process of getting back on your feet.

Protein Drinks will make you feel better and heal well. Protein is very important! Not just so you dont lose muscle mass but because you need to heal. I went off protein for 2 days one week after my surgery and I felt horrible! I went back on it and I feell much better and began to heal faster too. I am 3 weeks and 2 days out 32 pounds down. but just going slowly now with soft foods, I make sure i get the protein in first though. I wish you luck :)

My surgery was on 9/12. I am on full liquids. I do the glucerna shakes ( any store has these) 2 times a day and I drink pureed chicken noodle Soup for the other meal. I snack on SF popsicles, SF pudding and low fat greek yogurt. I also bought the unflavored Unjury Protein Powder and chicken flavor ( which can be used as a dinner - very very good flavor). Unjury has 21 g Protein per scoop. The unflavored is great to add to the shakes and Soups. I found I needed the protein each day to feel better Good Luck!

Soft foods could be like cottage cheese, greek yoghurt, you could blend chicken, tuna etc to make it more like a puree (add a bit of greek yoghurt). Any fish lightly steamed or poached could be mashed up until it was soft, scrambled eggs or a poached egg mashed up with a fork. You could make Soup with protein sources, and you can try Protein Shakes to top up your protein requirements.

I found Premier Protein shakes to be reasonably tasty, and it's 30g Protein per 11oz of Fluid, so you really get a ton of protein fast that way. Maybe it will agree with you too.

Try and keep a pillow near-by to put against your tummy when you sneeze, cough or laugh for a while, it helps. (Also, a heating pad on your tummy during the day when you are sitting, helps a lot)

After clear liquids is full liquids, I did full liquids for two full weeks. "Nothing that won't go through a straw" is what Dr. Davidson instructs. Cream of chicken Soup, strain out the chunkies. Skim milk is a decent source of Protein, I started and ended each day with a cup in an ice cold glass out of the freezer. Are you drinking a Protein shake or two? I love Tortilla Soup from a local Mexican food restaurant, sip the broth, avoid anything solid. Tastes wonderful, of course early out we can eat so little. I could get down 1/8th of a cup three times a day. I made some home made baked potato soup, and potatoes are not the best choice, but when you're only eating 1/8 of a cup at a time, I was fine. I baked a potato, mashed it, and then added skim milk, about an ounce of 2% cheddar cheese, instead of Lite Sour Cream, I added a little Greek yogurt, tastes like sour cream, waaaaay more protein. Add enough milk to make it the consistency of cream soup. Salt and pepper to taste, was delish.

I had surgery on Monday morning and all I can have for the next two weeks is one Protein shake per day, plus Water (Crystal light, unsweetened tea) to get me to at least the 64oz mark.

I didn't get anywhere near 64oz of liquid yesterday but today I seem to be doing ok, sitting at about 45oz right now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
