Italiancurves 117 Posted September 19, 2013 I'm only seeing Prilosec OTC in pill form in the store. Do they make something chewable beside those nasty chalky tums? What did you take?
vegasneon 181 Posted September 19, 2013 I take the Generic form of Prilosec that Walmart sells. Its Equate Omeprazole. Its such a slim little coated pill that I could swallow it even right after surgery. I've never seen a chewable PPI. I think the real OTC Prilosec might be as small- been so many years since I bought the name brand I could be wrong,. WalMart also has chewable Simethicone for gas. Its cherry flavored and not bad. Same thing as Gas-x. 1 FRED1977 reacted to this
Macy6 356 Posted September 19, 2013 My surgeon prescribed me 40mg Omeprazole and my insurance covers it. It is a capsule and I swallow it whole, no issues. 1 FRED1977 reacted to this

Italiancurves 117 Posted September 19, 2013 Oh wow, interesting...I thought we couldn't swallow anything whole in the beginning. I'm still six weeks pre op. so I don't need to crush it up , eh?

Did you wait to see if you even got the heartburn or did u just start taking it as a preventative right away? I never get heartburn, but I keep hearing everyone talk about it post op. sanks51 214 Posted September 19, 2013 Everyone's dr/hospital seems to follow different tablet protocol. My painkillers I was given in hospital were two whole tablets. I broke them in half and swallowed them fine. That was two days post op. I've never had chewable tablets or liquid..
Arts137 1,811 Posted September 19, 2013 There is a chewable RX Omeprazole... I used it
Bufflehead 6,358 Posted September 19, 2013 My surgeon prescribed 20 mg omeprazole capsules starting the day after surgery and I haven't had any problems with swallowing them. I think for the first month or so after surgery I probably would have had trouble with, say, one of those giant, horse-sized Calcium supplements, but regular size capsules and tablets haven't bothered me a bit. Italiancurves 117 Posted September 19, 2013 Sounds like I shouldn't buy them because they are prescribed by doctor in hospital, right? Ok thanks everybody...good to know!
SuzyB 182 Posted September 19, 2013 Each doc has their own methods. And that will change depending on how you do. I am 4 days post op, and take over the counter Prilosec tablets with out difficulty. If you have difficulty they will find something to work with you.

Tashabella 52 Posted November 14, 2014 They had me taking pills the second day at the hospital. I was afraid to take them and they said to go ahead and it would be fine. It was fine. Don't worry. Ask your doctor.
