Strange Throat Feeling?

Recommended Posts

Hard to explain, but curious if anyone else is experiencing/has experienced the same. Best way to describe it is that feeling you get after drinking a ton of lemonade and you throat feels like you have to keep making a gargling action but without any liquid in your mouth. Like its coated in god knows what and you constantly feel like your trying to cough/gag it up.

No idea if I just made any sense? If anyone can decipher my crazy description please let me know your thoughts! Think it could be ketosis related ( my breath is deadly so I have to be in it)? Maybe acid (I'm on PPI but might not be enough?)? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I'm guessing acid, or you could be overeating, which for me caused extra acid. Call the surgeon let him know and see if you can take your ppi 2x a day or switch to a different one and see if that helps. I had to take protonix 2x a day for a couple of months, now it seems to have settled down.

I'm on alot of conference calls for work, and all I can say is since surgery I've noticed that I have to clear my throat MUCH more than I used to. And I mean really clear it, like I put myself on mute while I do it. I make sure I always have a glass of Water next to me during calls now. I have no idea what it is, though, except to confirm that I am also definitely in ketosis, and occasionally suffer a little bit of acid.

Thank you both for the reply! Chinamama, I agree I think a call to my doctor is in order soon. I'm just starting soft foods, so I don't think I'm overheating (frankly I'm scared to eat LOL) but I will still ask the nutritionist to be sure.

Bella, yes! I literally go through BUCKETS of Water throughout my work day! I mean, at least we're meeting our Water requirements haha! Glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing this!

For me, if I over-eat even slightly, I get this to at least some degree. If I over-eat too much, I start getting a mysterious white foamy substance coming out of my mouth. And if I REALLY overdo it, then I just puke for a while.

Yeah, that's the foamies. It happened to me once... it's different than this constant feeling of needing to clear my throat.

I struggled with this after surgery. It showed up after I got thrush and I thought it had to do with that. It was so bad one night that I was gagging. Anyway it ended up being post nasal drip, I take a Zyrtec everyday now and it has been gone since. I also take 40mg Omeprazole and have since the day after surgery.

Really? Uh oh. I get the "foamies" often. Is that bad?

It means you are either eating too much OR too fast. If you really take your time eating, and stop BEFORE you are actually full, you shouldn't get the foamies. It helps to eat slowly because it usually takes a while for your brain to register that you are full... if you're eating too fast, you will have already eaten more bites before your brain registers that "fullness" feeling.... by then it's too late... you've eaten too much. Eat slow and less than what it takes to feel "full" and you should be okay.

Thanks Macy! I will keep this one in mind, too. Maybe it is allergies or something? I usually don't get them, but I'm noticing this surgery has completely changed my chemical makeup (not all bad things though!) so I wouldn't be surprised! Adding to my ask doctor list... :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
