Anyone had band for 4 or 5 years?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

Just had my first appointment, I am suppposed to be eating like I had a band already. Tiny bites, chew to mush, take 1/2 hour to eat, no liquids, no reading/TV etc while eating. Can't imagine doing that for the rest of my life. Can longer term bandsters tell me what it is like with those restrictions after 4 or 5 years?

Also, what is PB? Thanks for your input!

Bonnie

I know sisters who were banded in 2001. But this doesn't have to be answered by someone banded that long. I'm 11 months out and don't follow those guidelines. I haven't since the first handful of weeks. I'd be surprised if many people do. It doesn't take 4 or 5 years to get a "feel" for the band and what it will or will not allow. You learn that rather quickly, and get the occasional surprise.

PB is bringing up stuck food. Productive Burp. Though that's not an entirely accurate name. :(

The bariatric coordinator at my doc office was his very first LB patient, she says she's keeps her band pretty loose now that she is at goal....

I think she is 3 or 4 years out.

Hi!

Thanks to you all for your input. I was shocked when I started to read about people who can't eat bread, rice, Pasta, chicken, etc, I wondered if that meant for the rest of their lives. Don't know if I could stand that. My original picture of the band was that I would be able to eat pretty much anything just in smaller amounts. :phanvan

My surgeons have only been doing the lapband for 1 year so there aren't long term bandsters to talk to.

Thanks again for your help!

Bonnie

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
