Hello to all the November 2013 people,

I am scheduled for the operation on November 14th in Sydney, Australia. I have a two week Optifast programme to look forward to prior to to surgery date but I am thinking of starting a week earlier. For me, this is going to be the hardest part and any suggestions would be much appreciated. I think my motto will be 'Just Do It'! :-)

It is great to have this forum to chat about such a big change in life! I have noticed on this thread two other people having surgery the same date as myself....it is so nice to have some company! :-)

TTFN,

MrsSmyth

I wouldn't start early, it's hard enough. Maybe do a modified week (lo carb, no sugar, etc) and do the 2 wks of Optifast. It is wayyyy harder than I thought and I have cheated (protein bar) every day. Someone from the forum suggested broth, which has no cal and helped a lot. Also having contact with others that are also doing it with me really helps! Good luck!

I had bcbs of il and it took from 9-9 to 9-26 to get an answer

Why do you think it took so long for approval ??

One thing that might have taken so long is I did seminar, nut, then psych eval before approval. I didn't meet with my dr until oct 16. Now still have egd-tuesday and registering at hospital. Surgery on nov 4 really excited now but also scared. Now its more real that I have a date. I've NEVER had surgery on anything and I'm 36. The most I've had done is a root canal! Lol

Thank you for the reassurance! Though the thought of the flexible thingy in there made me puke hahaha. Better than a needle of course' date=' but I'm a super wimp with this phobia. Whenever someone mentions touching my veins or ditches (the inside of your elbow), I T-Rex (bend my arms in close to myself so that only my hands stick out hahaha) almost immediately uncontrollably and can't relax them for several minutes. I look ridiculous lol![/quote']

Funny! IVs for surgery are usually in the back of your hand or on the side of your wrist, not in the crook of your arm. If a skilled nurse places it, it often goes in even without a pinch.

*Throws up again*.

Thank you everyone for the reassurance, it's still the only part I'm freaking out about. Also, I've never been put under, never been drunk, or done any kind of drug (even when I was offered drugs before for other medical procedures I simply refused and did it without them). I hate not being in control of myself so hopefully I'm ok with anesthetic.

Ask the nurse to numb it first and save you the stress!

I tried asking to numb it first. With my son they did. With my daughter she said she didn't want to stick me twice. I told her I didn't mind cause I wouldn't feel the second one, but she still wouldn't do it. I don't mind needles and giving blood, but iv's r totally different!

I'm getting mine Nov 1st. I'm excited. I'm honestly just worried about the catheter !

I'm nervous about the catheter also. I had one once and it was HORRENDOUS! At my hospital they put it in once you are out so you don't have to go through that but it was after that it hurt so bad, it bothered me more than my surgery.

I have a 5 day full liquid pre op diet so I guess I shouldn't complain. Some people on here have it tough. Personally, I won't be starting any sooner. My date is also November 4th and I am excited and nervous.

If you want to start something early try 3 shakes during the day (breakfast , lunch , snack) then a low carb dinner (about 400 cals) that will keep you under 1 k and should help you lose weight ..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
