Gerd better after surgery?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon informed that my EGD Biopsy confirmed I have acid reflux and a small hernial hernia that she will repair during my sleeve procedure. My question is for those who had acid reflux/GERD prior to surgery, has it improved or gotten worse after the procedure? Thank you for your feedback.

I had very occasional reflux (usually at night, while sleeping) prior to surgery. My upper GI series revealed a small hiatal hernia and my surgeon fixed it during my sleeve surgery. I am 3 months out from surgery and have not had even the faintest hint of reflux. I am also on omeprazole.

Mine was bad after I had my band removed. I was put on 20mg omeprazole per day. Then after my sleeve my dr recommended 40mg omeprazole per day. As I take these religiously I have not had any GERD or reflux.

I have the same concern. My endoscopy is Thursday and its results will help me decide sleeve or bypass...hoping sleeve! The medical director heard me say reflux and immediately suggested bypass, but my mom is 10 years post RnY takes 2 PPI pills a day and had an esophageal ulcer 2 years ago!

I did not have gerd or any reflux symptoms pre sleeve. I now have issues. The symptoms have improved but I think the sleeve is know for acid reflux. Just my opinion but the bypass is a acid reducing surgery.

Thanks for all the feedback. I really appreciate it. I am on the fence to proceed with the surgery as the Dr advised me that after I am sleeved, it may resolve itself but if the Gerd issue continues, worse case would be a revision to a Bypass. I Do not want a bypass and was hoping to see if others improved after the sleeve. Thanks again!

I had Gerd before the surgery. I thought it was because I was "fat". Now after the surgery I still have it. I always keep medication on me just in case. I thought once I lost weight that it would get better but mine has worsened. Nothing I can't handle though.

My sleeve and i are still getting to know each other but i will say the first ten days after surgery were awful for the reflux at night. On prilosec 2x a day for a month but after those first ten days i can see a big difference and may not need prilosec at all once i am one month post OP

I keep hearing RnY is acid reducing but my mom still suffers at 150 lbs. and 10 years out...I guess it can depend on WHAT is causing your GERD. I just hope my endoscopy this week can answer that? And do I RnY to avoid a problem I may not get when I really want the Sleeve? I take no other meds and have no comorbidities, so the GERD thing is my only concern.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
