Secret Sleevers?

Recommended Posts

I work in a hospital and I am gifted woth total honesty...which meant that everyone who asked why I was going on medical leave, got the truth. My coworkers, friends, and family all know about this. Surprisingly I got a lot of positive feedback and some advice from many who have done it and some who have known someone close to them who did it. So I am glad that I was able to tell them!

I too am keeping this entire process a secret with the exception of my DH, my cousin and my nephew. My children are babies but if not they'd know too. My mother has not been told and I probable won't tell her...it's complicated. I have been at this door before with the RNY and I told quite a few people then backed out because I just knew that rearrainging my insides was not the option for me. I'm now getting the sleeve if I can get approved once again by my insurance. This was the surgery I always wanted but the prior surgeon kinda pushed the RNY. Not with that practice anymore. I am a little concerned about when my co-workers notice though and start asking questions. I really don't want to get into it but I work in a small office environment and it's not so easy to say buzz off to these people

After reading all these, I can understand both sides of the coin. I've told my closet friends and my Mom, not the rest of the family. I feel it was a personal decision and honestly only told my mom since it involved surgery otherwise I wouldn't have wanted her to worry!! As we get together for the holidays, I will have no problem telling my family ...

As for telling more friends, the closest ones I'm comfortable with, the others, not so much and I trust my close friends won't update them.

Work has been the biggest challenge. I told 2 of my coworkers, who have been considering the procedures, but no one else. I had it done during my vacation, so I didn't miss a step at work thus far ...

Now that I'm down 67 pounds, there is a noticeable difference. I feel comfortable advising them I decided to put me first and I'm really focusing on my eating now, which is the honest truth. As the boss, I don't need them to know all my personal details and feel I have the right to my privacy. This is my choice and my journey ... I'm going to do it on my terms!!

I'm kind of weird in that almost everyone at work knows but my husband is the only family member that knows. I'm not ashamed and I know they would be nothing but supportive...I just feel like its none of their business. To be totally honest, I'm not positive I've figured out the whole reason behind not reeling my family though.

I've kept mine a secret from almost everyone and am so glad I did. It's very personal and I don't feel I need to share my medical history with anyone.

Got my date today Secret Sleevers...Oct 23rd! I'm excited and anxious and scared...but mostly ready to get started w/my new healthy life..no more "big girl" references...so tired of being called big because I'm tall and over weight. My Weight is 233.6 and I'm 5'9 ..when I started I was 242.

This is the largest I've ever been but it's painful for me, 2 knee surgeries and several procedures to my lower back I'm just ready to be nice to my joints. Oh and how I live to sleep through the night again...sleep apnea is whooping my butt!!! And these blood pressure pills make me pee pee pee all day long...Lol! I'm so excited about never looking back and being healthy and happy..oh and sooooo cute! Lol!

Anyway...I really appreciate the support here, now I just gotta make sure my secret is kept safe..this is such a personal decision for me, I've always been so transparent, but this is different.

Any Oct 23rd Sleevers out there?

I've told most of my immediate family members (mom, dad, siblings, grandma, and my inlaws) I've also told a few co-workers and close friends.

I wish I would have kept it a little more of a secret but I know that I'm going to have a bunch of people commenting on my weight loss and I don't feel comfortable lying.

My husband, kids, mom, sister and boss know. No one else knows. I plan to keep it that way too. I don't want the constant questions and general nosey people to constantly bug me about it.

Once I get my approval(hopefully tomorrow) I may tell one friend so she knows. But that's it.

:)

At first I was going to keep it a secret..My co-workers knew because we operate like a family and so many people in my agency has had the surgery so it is no big deal around the job. Then I decided to let my family in on my decision and they have been very supportive with my decision. My family has always been a great support so I am not sure why I delayed sharing the news. My aunts are asking for my clothes once I shrink, my cousin asking can she have my bras (a lil TMI lol). Overall I am happy so the people that love me are happy and supportive I am very excited about my future and quality of life. Thank God I have not encountered any negativity. My words of encouragement to all is "do what is best for you as long as you are okay with the decision that you are making nothing else matters.... don't second guess yourself this is your life you have one shot at living it to the fullest make your shot count for you". Wishing everyone on this site with much success on their journey....Smile it is your time

She loves me,but won't understand...so I'm telling her I have to have a hernia surgery and will tell her the truth after I am recovered. Sounds horrible, but my mom won't understand...

I am having my surgery next week and the only people who know are my Mother and my very good friend who I work with. I only told h because of work.

I don't want negativity and opinions. All my friends are either skinny or normal size. They don't get it. I am

Going to Mexico and I can't even imagine what I would hear about that.

I do hate lying though. It is clear that I have struggled and when I loose wight I

Hate the thought of taking full ownership when I did have help.

I will decide if I tell anyone after. And I feel tell one tell all because most people have a big mouth.

almost everyone at work knows. My husband and boys are the family that I have told. My youngest mentioned my surgery to one of my sisters, but I have chosen not to talk about it with her. I do not plan on telling my mother or in-laws. I am like others in that I don't want or need negative comments. My best friend and I are both having the surgery. It is great to have someone on this journey with you.

I tried to keep it a secret, but after surgery a whole lot more people know. My husband slipped and let a few people know that I wanted to tell people myself. I did not go thru having a lot of people say why are you doing this its the easy way out.

Now I do not really care but I am also not putting up a billboard.

I've always been a private person when it comes to my health & personal issues. So I told only my husband, 3 very very close friends & my HR rep. No one else knows. I don't want the judgements, or overbearing concerns. Major health are easier for me to deal with when I keep things private, because I don't get the extra stressed from negative & unsolicited advice.

This has been a very positive experience for me & I'm glad I didn't share with too many folks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
