Relationship between gastric and respiratory tracts

Recommended Posts

Immediately after my GS surgery (April 17, 2013), I read a post here about having a drippy nose when they know they've eaten too much. When I read that, I thought, "Ew! I'm not gonna!" The idea of my nose just dripping - without warning - was disgusting and I was arrogant enough to think it was something that we could control. Later, when I *DID* eat too much, I leaned over the table and *DRIP*... there went my nose! ACK!!! Did I just DO that?!? My nose had not dripped uncontrollably since I was 4 years old! WASSUP WIT DAT?!? Since then, I have experienced the nose drip, the "slime" feeling in my mouth and sneezing after eating a meal - all things I've seen mentioned in others' posts. What I don't understand is this...

WHAT does eating food have to do with our respiratory system going slimey, causing our noses to drip and sneeze? Where is the corrolation? What anatomically is happening to connect the gastric system to the respiratory system?

It has something to do with the vagus nerve. I of course can not find the article I read about it, maybe someone else has or has more info. When I get home this afternoon I can research a little bit more.

It has to have something to with nerve triggers. That's the only thing I can think of. It's all in our brain/nervous system, where everything is interconnected. My nose also drips when I get full. I end most of my meals sniffling like a crazy person.

The Vagus nerve travels down right next to the esophagus, and I believe when we have eaten to much it causes pressure on the vagus nerve which then starts the sympathetic system which has an effect on histamine release witch in turn causes your nose to run.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
