5 day pouch test - day 1 report

Recommended Posts

I decided to do that 5 day pouch test I've heard about over the years. I don't think for a minute that my pouch is "broken" but I've heard from others that this 5 day plan gets you mentally and physically back on track and since I've gained 20 lbs over the past couple of years I figured I needed to try it.

I've noticed over the past year I have a bad binge cycle. I eat well for a few days and then go crazy. This probably scares the new sleeve patients and it should....bad habits lurk around the corner and our sleeve is a tool only not a miracle cure. Anyway, I am now an endurance athlete cycling long distances and running half marathons so I eat ALOT. I should choose good things to fuel my body but honestly I haven't been. So, time for change.

Google 5 day pouch test if you want to know details but basically it is liquid protien for 2 days, then soft protien for 1 day and then firm protien the last 2 days. A very shortened version of what you do right after surgery but you are doing it in only 5 days.

Yesterday was liquid only for me. WOW was it hard!!! I had forgotten what it was like to not eat food. I had a protien mocha frappe in the morning, protien hot chocolate, then a protien shake for lunch, chicken broth in the afternoon and evening and drank half an adkins shake. I felt very tired. I was supposed to ride about 40 miles on the bike and after 18 miles I called it good. Took 2 naps and I never nap.

Today I'm at work and have already had a cup of hot mocha protien coffee (Fit Frappe by Big Train) and then took an adkins shake blended it with a little PB2 and some ice. I brought broth with me and more powder for another shake. I am supposed to ride about 27 miles after work but we will see about that.

Weight loss so far - ready for this? NONE. That was not even right. No food and no Water weight loss? What the heck? LOL However - I feel so much more in control and so encouraged by doing this. I really am okay that the scale didn't move yet. It will. Stay tuned.

Very interested in hearing what your results are once you complete the 5 days. I have yet to be sleeved, but I am very curious about long term maintenance. This sounds like a very reasonable and "do-able" method of getting back on track. So much better than without the sleeve for sure...LOL

Some of us veteran's are doing the fastdiet. Also know as 5:2 diet. This is where you eat normally for 5 days and 2 days you eat 500 calories. We have done very well losing some of the stubborn lbs that we regained....Check it out in the Veteran's forum....:P

Thanks so much...I will check out that 5/2 plan. Once I finish this 5 days maybe I need to transition into that until the weight is off.

Hang in there you can do it. Then you'll be back on track.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
