Type I diabetic, SCARED!

Recommended Posts

Hey I'm Amanda, age 29. I have had type I diabetes for nearly 20 years. My weight has always fluctuated since having my son 9 years ago. I am scheduled to have my surgery this Tuesday, 9/17. I am a little nervous and scared, but I feel as though I'm making the right decision for my health! Any suggestions and comments will be appreciated on things to expect or just whatever! Thanks...

Hey Amanda!

Very excited for you and what you are feeling is TOTALLY NORMAL.

You are taking a very important step to prolonging your life and being around for your son for many many years to come.

Be prepared to have it all happen so fast - and before you know it, you'll be in recovery.

You might have good days and bad days, but I'll tell you, each day gets better, each day gets easier, each day you get one day closer to feeling and looking better than you have in years!

Sending positive vibes your way for Tuesday!

x2 on everything Kirk said. It is the best decision I've ever made. I was borderline diabetic pre-op, now I'm nowhere near in it.

Hang in there. Keep closly working with your endrocrinologist. All the research says that the sleeve can do GREAT things for DM.

Woohoo! 4 U in making this decision to improve your health. I have to agree with the previous posters. The sleeve although not a cure fore type 1 diabetes, it has been shown to improve it greatly. Those of us that are borderline with type 2 or already have type 2 diabetes it can stop it in its tracks.

Good Luck to you on this journey.

I've been type one for 17 years, never could control it as much insulin as I was taking. I now take maybe 2-3 every few days to week just to keep me going. I changed my lift and diet, I've lost 90 pounds with 10 to goal. Now I have 22 bottle of novolin n and r sitting in my fridge. I have a normal a1c and normal cholesterol now. U r making a wonderful decision!

Well the count down is 1 hour! Last night was terrible, I was so sick! But much better this morning!! Still nervous, anxious, scared, and worried! But I ask Gods protection over the doctors while they perform my sleeve surgery, protection over my body, and a quick recovery!! Good luck to all the other sleevers today! Be blessed ????

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
