I just wanted to check with everyone to see if anyone is having acid reflux after everything you put in your mouth. I get up in the morning and take my Vitamins and drink Water it starts right away and everything after that burns my chest. I am almost three weeks out and this is a pain that I am taking tums all day everyday. Help!

Are you taking an acid reducer daily to prevent acid reflux?

I had it before surgery and immediately after it improved. The past week though its been beyond fierce - my throat is sore and my teeth have been affected too. On higher meds now and that seems better.

Call your Dr. Many programs recommend a PPI (proton pump inhibitor), such as Prilosec or Prevacid, for the first three months. Tums does not work in the same way and won't be as effective. I highly recommend trying one and seeing if it helps. Your doc can provide a prescription and the correct dosage.

After my lapband slipped, I developed severe nightime reflux. So bad sometimes I'd wake up and there'd be brown **** on my pillow. My throat would burn from the acid and I would vomit every nite. After my revision, my reflux stopped. I developed heartburn, however, after everything I eat. The new PPI my dr prescribed for after surgery (Pepcid) didn't work and I had to start retaking my pre surgery Prilosec, which works great.

ASk ur dr for a PPI. They all work differently, so he can decide which one is best for you.

Good luck!

Ok so I found out the my doctor gave me a prescription for nexium but my insurance did not cover it. So I never got it filled, called today to find out what I could do. My favorite person at the hospital changed it to something that the insurance will cover. So I now have my medicine now so hope it will get better. Thanks everyone for the advice.

It gets better as you loose weight. But many have issues with reflux long term. One of the side effects

I started having a major problem with reflux at one month out and I was already on the PPI. I'm not getting a burn but rather severe pain. It's discouraging! I'm getting it with every bite I eat and even when I'm not eating.

I too am getting what I think to be reflux after every bite I eat. It's frustrating! Do you think switching from Prilosec to a generic has something to do with it?

I don't know if the brand has anything to do with it. I was prescribed omeprazole and I found it in the store today because I forgot to take it this morning so I bought some. I took two to equal my prescribed amount. It is working fine.

I'm taking 40mg Nexium and just lately it's barely touching it. Sometimes I take 2 a day and still have burning in my chest and throat. Can't lay flat or even close to it or i end up "choking on acid". Bitter taste in my mouth. Even my ears are aching now (acid affecting Eustachian tubes, perhaps?). I feel completely rubbish and it's affecting my ability to do so much. I am 5.5 months out and at first felt really good and halved my reflux med, but this is awful... And scarey. Has anyone else had reflux this bad and been able to get it under control with meds alone? I fear what is happening to my stomach and oesophagus and where this could lead me. Help need!

I bought Pepcid chewables today and am finally getting a little relief. I never had anything like this before surgery. I take the omeprazole 40 mg every morning. I wonder if I could take two per day...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
