Will I still enjoy cooking for my Family after Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I love cooking for my family. Trying new recipies, fixing old favorites, I love it all. So my question, Will I still enjoy cooking after I have Sleeve?

I think you will... I do. There was a small period where I was the grinch about it lol but I got over that. I love it again. Maybe it was just bad because I had my surgery less than two weeks before Christmas.

Yes you will. Maybe not right away, there is a small window where you may hate it but it won't last long. At least for me it didn't. I wish you the best as you begin your new journey!!!

Cooking yes, eating no because you are basically eating to survive.. Your portions are very small and you might just enjoy the first couple of bites then become upset because you can't even eat an entire kids portion of food. Just my 2 cents

I love cooking!! I just choose one day a week and basically do all my meals for the week.. Freeze in lots and lots of little portions and hey presto :)

  • Most everyone agrees the same on this, there is a short period where its not very enjoyable because if the liquid diet, then soft foods etc.. especially if like me i still had to cook for my family everday. but when yo
  • u can start eating small amounts of your meals again you get back to enjoying it.

I agree, at first it sucks, and I even envied them a little bit because they got to enjoy and I couldn't. But after a while I started liking it again. After about 8 months I enjoyed it even more because I could have some of my cooking as well. All of my family ended up losing weight with me, ( not that they were over weight to begin with) because I would make the receipts with healthier ingredients.....they never even noticed the difference, but my husband and son benefitted the most because both of their guts went away. They still don't know why...lol :)

I agree with what appears to be the common consensus here that after the first couple months you will enjoy it again. I know that I personally enjoy cooking for my kids. Also I enjoy figuring out healthy versions of my favorite meals to cook for myself and the kids. Good Luck, enjoy the journey.

I still adore EVERYTHING about food... eating it, smelling it, cooking it, shopping for it... Oh Glorious FOOD!

I watch food porn almost daily.. heck, on the plane ride home from my surgery, I watched food porn... the really seedy kind (diners drive thrus and dives)When I got back, I stayed with my sister to "recuperate" and I couldn't keep myself from doing all the cooking for her and her family.. even though I was on shakes only.

The only thing that I struggle with is making bread. I can not eat wheat products (not related to the sleeve, I found out a few months prior to the sleeve that I had this problem) and it SUCKS to have the smell of fresh bread which I know I can NEVER eat. grrrrrr. I was fine when I couldn't eat the food and I knew it was just temporary until my tummy healed.. and I was fine when I'm just low carbing it and there are foods I CHOOSE not to eat... but the BREAD drives me nutty because it's something I CAN'T have at all.

I understand. My best friend - bread was denied me about 3 years ago... I had a temper attack, cried and acted a complete fool. But my stomach won - no more regular bread (wheat, oats, bran & barley). Ohhh I hate food allergies!!! Gluten free Bisquick is my go to! I make mini-mini muffins to get my bread thing on when I have a craving that wont quit. Hope it helps! Blessings!

I made dinner for my family days after surgery, it made me feel like I was getting back to the norm. I had no issues with it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
