Pictures of my hairloss 18 weeks after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! This is simply another post about hair loss! Before I had my surgery I read thread after thread about the Hair loss that almost everyone has post operatively. I thought I was prepared and could handle some hair loss....afterall the benefits of the weight loss far out weigh a little bit of hair loss. However, I was not prepared for how much hair loss I would actually have...its been depressing. I started losing my hair around 3-4 weeks post op. not alot at that time but it was noticeable. I'm currently 18 weeks post-op. I've lost 42 lbs...the weight is coming off very slowly and the hair loss has been massive. It worsened at 3 months and has been getting worse each week. Before my surgery my hair was average thickness I could loop my ponytail holder 2 times, now I'm looping it 4 times. I'm going to attempt to post pictures of my hair loss over the last two days. I've increased my Protein and Water intake I get 80-100 grams of protein daily (I recently started using New Whey Protein Shots just to see if they would help) and I've been taking Biotin 10,000 daily, my Multivitamin, B12 sublingual tabs and I've almost finished the bottle Shen Wen Hair Regrowth formula. Nothing has helped it's only gotten worse. My hairstylist told me hair grows in 3 month cycles and it would grow back so I'm keeping the faith but I'm afraid I'm going to be totally bald by the time I hit 6 months post op. I'm sharing this with others because I want those considering or prepping surgery to be aware... I would still have the surgery over again. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from changing their minds about the surgery my goal is awareness.

Oh boy I am right there with you! I lose that much hair each time I wash and comb it out. So I only wash it twice a week now! My surgeon reiterated at my 3 month appointment that IT GROWS BACK! I am holding on to that fact and preparing to wear hats and scarves if necessary. So far the loss seems to be from all over so I don't have a "bare patch" anywhere. It is scary, but I agree with you I would rather be at a healthier weight than worry about thin hair!

I went through this last year when I had to have emergency surgery. For several months my hair was falling out just like yours, handfuls at a time. A year post op from that emergency surgery I am happy to say it did stop and my hair is growing back. I know it's shocking while it happens, but it gets better.

I cut mine into a short bob, and then layered it with highlights. It adds the appearance of volume to your hair. It does grow back, and it will stop falling out soon enough. :) good luck!

I'm pre op & get that much in a regular days brushing. I wonder how much is regular loss & how much is from weight loss.

I haven't had surgery yet, but sadly, in my early 30's, I started losing my hair...huge bald spots on top and in the back. I tried a number of things. Something that has worked for me.... My friend saw it in the Skymall magazine on her flight. It's called Toppik and my kids joke that it looks like pepper. But, you just sprinkle these "flakes" in your hair (you buy the color closest to yours). Best thing I've found so far for this issue. Google it....good luck :)

I'm 10 months out and starting to see re-growth. I have little baby hairs poking out everywhere. I had incredibly thick hair before surgery and while it never got thin- it was a noticeable loss (say from really thick to the thinner side of average). I'm ready to have my hair back to normal :)

I have always lost a lot of hair on average I did notice mine increased, but I would say I'm 99% back to normal now!

I lost ALL of my hair during chemo treatment for cancer and I can tell you this was not nearly as bad. It grew back after chemo and no doubt as much as possible will grow back considering that I am 64 and my uncles were all billiard balls.

Thanks everyone I appreciate your encouraging responses. I'm feeling better! I am going to try washing it every other day instead of every day for awhile and see if that helps. It seems worse when I Shampoo we shall see. Thanks again!!!!

This makes me happy. I have thick hair and usually have it thinned a few times a her, but I stopped last December in preparation hoping it will even out.

Hope you don't mind me asking but since your surgery date have you gotten your Proteins & liquids in everyday and taken a multivitamin and biotin and still gotten this kind of hair loss???

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
