Macy6 356 Posted September 14, 2013 I have avoided them, the funny thing is yesterday I got an iced tea from Sonic when I was out and about and never thought anything about it I just drank it. I didn't have any issues with gas etc because of it. I don't make it a habit because I was told not to but there are plenty of people on here who use them and were never given the restriction. steffranco 45 Posted September 14, 2013 Why are you not supposed to use straws?! Why dint anyone tell me?! Lol
Batman 31 Posted September 14, 2013 I'm still pre op at this point but I've been practicing behaviors for after. I actually find that I drink more controlled (shaker sips) through a straw. My surgeon is not against straws.
DanielleSleeve 82 Posted September 14, 2013 Yeah my surgeon is not against straws he says go for it.. It's so funny that surgeons are so different lol Yeah I felt better drinking from a straw last night I know it sounds kinda weird but it felt like I got a lot of fluids in lol
AngiD 95 Posted September 14, 2013 I'm still pre-op but what I've been told is not to use them in the beginning because it cause gas in your stomach and right after surgery you can already have gas from surgery.
Guest ApplesnChiliPowder Posted September 14, 2013 It has a lot to do with how much air you get when you drink out of a straw. The bigger concern is at the end of the drink when people tend to slurp it up creating air pockets in the straw. I have found that if you just open your mouth before you swallow, or drink the last drink without the straw all is well!
skibunn42004 7 Posted September 14, 2013 I have had an issue that I wont put my mouth on a glass. I have used a straw for years. Now I buy bottled Water. I am 6 weeks post op and I do use straws sparingly. I think the issue came from years of living in NY and we all used straws.
newat52 1,613 Posted September 14, 2013 I've been using a straw since 3 weeks out. Has not bothered me one bit. I get way more liquids per day with a straw than without.
marfar7 1,533 Posted September 14, 2013 I asked my PA at my 4 week post op visit if straws were ok. He said "why not?" So happy. I think a bendy straw makes everything taste better. 3 VSG AJH, steffranco and Mel1071 reacted to this
SerendipityHappens 1,594 Posted September 14, 2013 I prefer to drink from a straw. I never was gassy from it even right after surgery. I think some people swallow a lot of air when they're using a straw, but I guess I don't. Or maybe I'm just not a gassy person.. I can also drink carbonated beverages without issue..I can even drink carbonated beverages through a straw without issue.... My doctor told me that straws and carbonated beverages are things that SOME people have issue with but if I don't have issue then it's no problem to use/drink them... except I was told no soda while the sleeve was healing for the first six weeks. gamergirl 4,610 Posted September 14, 2013 I drink with them all the time. Otherwise I don't get all my liquids in. They've never caused a problem for me 1 Molly3 reacted to this
