So I was sleeved 9/9. I am having the most horrific acid reflux. It feels burny in my stomach and in my chest. My surgeon said its totally normal and to start taking mylanta. Im starting to freak out because it feels like heart pain. I cant even sleep its so bad. I hold my breath til it subsides and I just cry and cry. Please, advice from anyone on this???

Are you taking a daily PPI like lansoprazole (prevacid) or something similar?

I am pre-op, waiting on a mid-November sleeve. About a year ago I had an endoscopy because of severe reflux, and came away with a prescription for a Protein pump inhibitor called Omeprazole. Love it!!!!! I take one in the morning, about 1/2 hour before I eat anything, and I have relief from reflux all day. Two adjustments I had to make was 1) no caffeine because it was a major irritant and 2) no ibubrophen - also an irritant. Other than that, can't be easier. However, Omeprazole is a prescription drug. Maybe others have suggestions about over-the-counter stuff if you can't get a script. I will be taken off of it just prior to surgery, but if I need it afterwards, I for sure will holler for it.

I've been taking omeprazole 40mg every day since my surgery but at one month out (now) I'm experiencing the same pain in my chest. Ive never had anything like this and even with the PPI I'm suffering greatly all day and at night too. :-(

I am 2 months out and trying to go without a PPI as of tomorrow. Wish me luck. I did not have reflux pre-op, but had extra stomach acid post-op. I hope I don't need to stay on one. But I do know that the stomach acid mimics hunger and I look for carbs to absorb ...

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
