Pleasantly surprised

Recommended Posts

I was very nervous about telling people about my surgery. Even to the point I was deciding whether or not to lie about it. I had already told my husband, family and a few close friends and my boss, but no one else. The problem is I have a job that requires lifting, so I have to take 6-8 weeks off work. I knew I would have to give some explanation to my coworkers, at least the ones in my department. I decided I didn't want to lie and I would just tell them the truth. I was prepared for some backlash and negative opinions. I was prepared to explain the surgery and why I thought it was what I needed to so to be healthy. Turns out...everyone was very positive and encouraging. Coworkers even said they are excited for me. They know how I have struggled and are happy that I am excited and ready to commit to a drastic change to be healthy. It made me feel a lot better to be honest especially with such positive reactions! :-)

The few co-workers I have told have been surprisingly supportive as well. It's great when people surprise you!

I work at a group home so I only have three coworkers I see everyday. they have been some of the MOST supportive people I've told. I eat dinner at work and my coworker goes above and beyond to make sure we're having healthy, well balanced meals. my clients got put on a healthier diet unknowingly because of me. so everyone has lost weight! haha.

That's great news!!!!

I am one of those who has kept it rather quiet--not even my family knows.....but I did tell my inlaws....didn't want my SIL who struggles with her weight to think I found some magic cure......They are so very supportive.......and with any luck I've planted a seed; perhaps given my SIL some hope....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
