Protein Shakes and Smoothies

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I have a question...

I am trying to get myself geared up for surgery by starting on my Protein Shakes and smoothies early. When I am on the liquid diet after surgery, can I still have the fruit and veggie Protein smoothies or do I have to stick to something basic like Unjury in milk?

Thanks in advance!

I was allowed fruit as long as they were fresh and puréed well. My nut said to shy away from any veggies unless cooked for the first 3-6 months because they are harder for the tummy to break down.

It really depends on your surgeon's plan. I wasn't allowed any fruits or veggies in shakes, smoothies, or any other form (other than diluted fruit juice or v-8 to drink in small amounts) until my soft foods phase, which started two months after surgery. I think my surgeon is more rigid than most on avoiding them until well after surgery.

As you read people's stories here on VST you will find that there is no standardization about what you can and can't eat and the timing of food. I would have gone insane if I had to do 2 months of a liquid diet. I was on liquids 2 weeks before surgery and 2 weeks after, and I was never so glad to see a scrambled egg as I was after that month!

Best to get a clarification from your doctor's office as the post surgery guidelines vary tremendously from doctor to doctor.

I have been using a vanilla whey Protein with all sorts of different fruit and veggie combinations. I was wondering if I would still be able to drink that during the liquid stage post-op...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
