My teeth are now turning yellow. What the hay?

Recommended Posts

I take very good care of my teeth. Brush, floss, never miss a demtist's appt. Last few weeks I've noticed my teeth are turning yellow! Gross! And they feel weirdly coated even right after I've diligently used my electric toothbrush all over them.

What the hay??

Am I like a dog that needs crunchy fruits and veg to keep my smile sparkling? Is it because I can't eat them now that my teeth feel gritty? Seems unlikely because um...I'm human and I use fricking toothpaste but I have no idea why this is happening and it's worrying me.

Any thoughts or similar experiences to share?

I've been noticing that my teeth feel unclean. Maybe it's the Protein Shakes?

I haven't noticed yellowing' date=' but my teeth are definitely wearing sweaters now. Sorry gamergirl, I can't explain it but you are not alone.[/quote']

That's exactly what they feel like! Sweaters. Very descriptive.

I am of the mind that we are in Ketosis, and that makes our mouths nasty. Bad breath, fuzzy teeth, I don't know about the yellowing, but I will have to use my other brain (google) and see if I can find any medical literature on this phenomena. Are you brushing your teeth right after eating? I read an article that says if you brush right after you eat, the toothpaste and brush send what you eat into the enamel of your teeth. The article suggested rinsing your mouth with Water and waiting 30 minutes to brush. Was so counter every thing we ever learned, but interesting..

Haven't noticed the yellowing, but other than that, I'm totally with you. I've been referring to it as cesspool mouth. Just gross! I totally hate it! And no gum, even!

Hi guys, I'm a dental nurse... I would say its the ketosis. Also make sure you are brushing your tounge every day too. Brushing straight after eating acidic foods can wear your enamel away. My breath has been a tad smelly & tounge brushing def helps.

LOL and I thought it was because I am behind on my 6 month cleaning! My husband wants me to find a new dentist and I've been procrastinating. Love my dentist, hate the b*****s in the front office.

I noticed it after drinking Protein Drinks. I can assure you though, it gets better!

Wow. I have been wondering why my mouth never felt clean anymore even right after brushing. I was thinking it was because I'm having hard time getting in my fluids. Maybe that's not it after all.

My teeth definitely do not feel clean, even right after brushing. It's disgusting!

Does the ketosis also account for the fuzzy teeth? I thought it would account for the bad breath.

It is all the Protein. My teeth are groos and my bf is always calling me on my breath. I just brushed and my mouth feels clammy and i know my breath is bad. It is all the protein. So it probably is ketosis.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
