Ketosis

Did you know that ketosis really has nothing to do with all the Protein or Protein shakes. It's actually the result of the body burning fat cells for energy!? And as far as the bad breath, "But there is one type of ketone molecule, called acetone, that cannot be used and is excreted as waste, mostly in the urine and breath"

Nothing out plaque build up or "fuzzy" teeth though?!

I don't so much have the bad breath just the sweaters on my teeth.

I googled this and there are SO many low carb-ers complaining about it. At least we're not alone. Although I still want to know WHY.

My teeth have yellowed too and I am only 13 days out. I brush, floss, use mouthwash and brush my tongue. What is going on? And will it remedy itself or will I need to have them whitened?

Hi guys, I'm a dental nurse... I would say its the ketosis. Also make sure you are brushing your tounge every day too. Brushing straight after eating acidic foods can wear your enamel away. My breath has been a tad smelly & tounge brushing def helps.

Would brushing with baking soda and peroxide help?

Here is a response straight from a dentist.

It may have to do with an imbalance of nutrients but usually bad breath and dry mouth go hand and hand with excess bacteria on the tongue, often associated with not having enough saliva due to medication or dehydration.

We always first recommend a tongue scraper to mechanically remove bacteria then something like Biotene which is a saliva facilitator.

I am a dentist and went through the sleeve 6 weeks ago ... a few explanations ...

bad breath is likely due to the ketosis .... your body is excreting the acetones and that can cause bad breath ... also, I think part of it is due to dehydration ... at least it was for me ... I noticed when I did better on staying hydrated, my teeth felt much cleaner and the breath was bad ... when you are dehydrated, your salivary flow may decrease thus making the issue even worse.

as for the yellowing of the teeth, at this point, we are mostly hammering Protein shakes which for most are chocolate ... this can cause some discoloration of your teeth ... give it some time - worst case you might consider whitening your teeth in 6 months or so after your diet is stabilized.

I wouldn't recommend peroxide or baking soda ... good hygiene and toothpaste are your best bet and, there is NO way in heck brushing your teeth immediately following eating is going to brush the food into your teeth ... just saying.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
