Everyone's experience is different. In my experience surgeons don't really have warm and fuzzy personalities so don't let that throw you off. They will give you lots of info and explain the testing that would be needed prior to surgery if you choose to go that route. I was overwhelmed but just take it one step at a time. ;) Good luck.

I am 6 weeks post op and very happy with my decision.

Thanks for asking the question, my first appt is one week from today... And I too was wondering what to expect. I will hopefully be having surgery in San Diego at UCSD. Anybody have any experience with UCSD?

My program is run pretty smoothly. They base your testing pre op off of your insurance carrier. They have us come in for half days to knock out 3 appts in one half day.

Also, with my program, you don't meet the surgeon until your approved for the surgery. Their in very high demand and they weed out the not so serious folks by doing things that way.

But every program or clinic has their own ways of doing it.

I was lucky, I had very little requirements per my ins., so today I did my 2nd half day and got the green light for submitting to ins. I hope to have that happen by this Friday or Monday.

Once I get the approval, I see the surgeon within 2 weeks. He sets up whatever tests he thinks I need based on all of what I've done already. This is also when we set a date.

Hope this helps a little.

Like someone else said earlier, every place is different. And, I think it depends on the requirements of your insurance.

When I left the center after my first appt., my head was spinning and I felt very negative. I just knew that I could not put all the info that they gave me into practice. I just knew that the psych eval. would reject me.

I found this forum and posted. I got a lot of support.

Today I am feeling great. I'm on the eating plan that they gave me. It is so simple once I started doing it. It's not complicated at all.

Everything is just falling into place.

I went to the center today for a class w the psych and exercise lady. Saw the nurse pract. I am losing weight. Well out of the 300s today.

I also saw the smoking cessation lady. Tomorrow I will be off the nicotine replacement therapy and nicotine free. She gave me a breathalizer and I was a three, which is really good.

So, if you come home feeling like I did after my first appt., just keep going back. It does get better.

Hugs

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
