Okay, here is my big question of the hour...

If for some reason my period decides to be around on my surgery day, even though it is not supposed to be, will they still do the surgery, or will it be postponed???

This may sound like a silly question, but my Aunt Flo has a tendecy to get off schedule at the most inconvenient times, such as coming along on vacations, etc. and I am afraid this might happen this time too....

Aunt Flo blessed me by coming a few days before surgery and continued right on through it. They did my surgery no prob. They gave me some funky mesh granny panties and a massive pad that seemed like it would cover the state of Tennessee :heh: but they still did it.

I don't think having your period will affect your surgery at all. It's not ideal, but you can definitely deal with it.

I never had a catheder. They wanted me up moving as soon after surgery as possible and that included walking to the bathroom. Every doctor must be different about that. Did they tell you that you'd have one?

My Aunt Flo moved right in the day before surgery. I have a friend who is banded and I asked her and low and behold she had the same issue. She is a nurse though and was able to tell me not to worry about it. She said they will just hand you an enormous boat of a pad and a pair of those pretty little mesh panties that they usually reserve for new mothers and send you off to the bathroom. I didn't have a catheter either for this surgery, but I did for my c-sections and it was much worse in my mind than in reality. Good luck!

Funny, I've been thinking about this all day long. I have to first clear up my head cold before I can have my surgery on the 23rd, which is also the day I start my period. I've been so worried because I also get Migraines with my period. I don't want anything messing this up. I just wish the messy things would go away right now. LOL!!

Everyday it seems I have a NEW worry...and I am glad to here the NO catheder part, but all my pre-op appointments are today and I will ask just to be sure.

I have the leftover cold/flu thingy worry also, as I had the flu the first week of January and actually lost about 8 pounds and all I can think about is, gee, what if the doc thinks she has lost this little bit of weight, she does not need this lap band, even though I know it plus 3 pounds will be back on me in no time flat! SEE I TOLD YOU I AM WORRIED ABOUT EVERYTHING!!!!! I feel obsessive, even though I am not normally this way.

So...to sum up my worries....Aunt Flo, colds, the little bit of weight I lost, catheders, and oh yeah, let's not forget: what if they change their mind and say NO! (I really do not think this will happen, just obsessing is all!)

Charlotte-your worries are completely normal! We have all been where you are and all had our own set of concerns. I too was concerned about Auny Flo and about getting a cold or flu. I didn't want anything to get in the way of getting this surgery. Having never had surgery before, I was worried about everything!

As much as I worried about the surgery, I was that much and more excited about it and the possibilities it opened to me. I think most surgeons anticipate a little weight loss before surgery because a lot of them do a pre-op diet. Even if your surgeon doesn't require you to do a pre-op diet, I know they are aware of your desire to lose weight and have to know that even now a person could be trying and therefore might lose a few pounds.

The time up until surgery is an excited and scary time and we all know what you are going through. Feel free to ask any questions because that's what we are all here for so lean on us. I look forward to having you join us in Bandland!!

I too was on my period during my surgery. I go the nice mesh paties and a big ole pad. After surgery they made me go to the bathroom as soon as I woke up. Well I was used to pads sticking to the panties and these do not so it fell in the toliet. The nurse had to fish it out! I was soooo embarressed!!!! I even offered to get it if they gave me gloves but they would not let me!!!!!! My husband was rolling!!!!!

I was not on my period for my surgery (though I had asked and they assured me it happens all the time, and they would just give me a pad and "securing garments" - which must be the granny panties!). Thankfully. I haven't worn a pad since I was 12 and I can't imagine trying to swap out... you know whats... right after surgery. Ugh ow.

And I didn't need a catheter. And no one asked me to go to the bathroom after surgery.

I guess up until about 4 months before my surgery my surgeon required bowel preps, thank goodness I missed that one. I've seen my mother endure one of those prior to a colonoscopy, and I certainly didn't envy her any!

I'll be getting my period two days after my surgery. I'm on the pill; so it comes like clockwork. Though, I realize Anesthesia may affect this. At first I was worried about cramps, etc., but then realized - GREAT...I'll have my percocets from the hospital to deal with that! hehehe

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
