I would think they'd approve it based on other factors like BMI, weight & your high cholesterol too. As for low Iron, I've had that several times due to chemo and just had to pump up my intake of spinach and other leafy greens and it's always worked like a charm.

The insurance company will base their decision on what paperwork the doctor submits and if bariatric surgery is allowed under your policy.

I'm pretty sure than 99% of WLS patients have high cholesterol! You'l be fine. The Iron issue can be resolved pretty easily with a good suppliment.

My blood test showed low Iron too, turned out to be a sickle cell blood disorder and I still got approved by my insurance and had surgery last month. I did have to get cleared by a hematologist though.

I had low Iron stores on my initial lab work 3 months before surgery. I had to have 2 iron infusions & then take iron capsules 3 times a day. I wasn't anemic, though. I have to stay on the iron until I have blood work done again 3 months after surgery.

I would be more concerned about your surgeon having an issue with the anemia than anything. I have a girl in my support group who got up to her pre op diet and was called a couple days before surgery and her surgery was put on hold.

I am anemic prior and after surgery. I am two months from when I had surgery and now doing Iron infusions using feremane. The anemic did get worst after surgery so the surgeon referred me to hemotagist. I have to take my second dose of feremane this Friday. It should not affect your surgery.. But you might want to to you surgeon or PCP about taking iron supplement now.
