Second Thoughts

Recommended Posts

Is it normal to start having second thoughts the closer to surgery? I know for a fact that this will probably be the only way for me to lose weight but I'm just second guessing myself. I feel that each day it's getting harder. They are submitting to my insurance next month and I'm scared to death now! I still have bad habits to break still and I'm terrified of losing my hair! I'm afraid of losing weight and drawling attention to myself. Is that weird or what? I'm scared to be a normal weight? What is going on with me... Please give me some positive comments if you have been thur this!

Many people have second thoughts as they head into this. The permanency of this surgery is tough to grapple with for many people, but my guess is that you got to this decision for many reasons. Perhaps it would be helpful to make a list of those reasons, then keep them in your purse? It may help to remind you when your doubt is getting the best of you.

And, for people who have been large all of their life, or at least for awhile, we're definitely scared of all of the things you mentioned above - but, is the end goal worth the journey? The journey WILL be hard. You WILL stall. You WILL probably lose hair (I haven't yet and I'm just past 3 months post-op...knock on wood). For me, though, it's all worth the end goal of a healthier, happier, longer living me!

The bad habits? That's what's fun about the sleeve - you're kinda "forced" to break many of those habits. I can't stuff myself with a plate of nachos anymore, even if I wanted to. I physically can't. I don't drink Diet Coke anymore - I wasn't allowed to have it for the first 30 days post-op because of the carbonation, and now I just don't want it. I can't eat fast. I can't take big bites. I needed the "forced behavior modification" that a sleeve provides, and I'm happy with my journey thus far!

Fears are normal. YOU make the choice whether or not to conquer them. Best of luck to you!

It is very normal to have second thoughts....This surgery is not for the faint of heart...trust me....but! You must have done a lot of research about it and made a choice to improve your health and make your life better...This is one of the reasons we do it..All other options have been tried.

Personally I was chomping at the bit to get the surgery done and I ended up with a lot of complications....You are feeling normal..This is major surgery!

Your going to be scared but very happy when it is done and you are on your journey to a healthier and better you! :)

Yes, very normal. Your "head" would love for you to give up and keep doing ALL the things that got you fat and keeps you fat! The sleeve helps, but we all must face our personal food and fat demons!

Yes, you're normal. It's like being fat is a security blanket, and it's hard to let it go. But you know it's a step in growing up (keeping that metaphor) and you are looking forward to it but some days you don't want to do it. Trust me, the thin you inside is going to be so excited at what you can do and how good you'll feel physically. But some days you'll want to crawl back inside and hide. Definitely not for the faint of heart. But nothing worth having is easy.

Best of luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
